Bait gun

An old guy came into the shop the other day and we talked about firearms and politics awhile.
He mentioned that he always carried two handguns concealed, a small one and a big one.
I piped in "for a NY reload".
He said no, that his father taught him to fumble the smaller firearm and when the bad guy, thinking he's disarmed, goes to pick it up he would then draw the larger firearm and have at the bad guy.
Kinda made sense to me, somewhat.
Anyone else heard of this? Opinions?
 
That is a ridiculous strategy. If you have time to fumble draw some second gun in order to use the primary gun, then quite obviously you have sufficient time to just use the primary gun.
 
If the BG is unarmed thats not a terrible idea...but against an armed BG its a pretty good way to get yourself lit up. Not a bad idea to carry two guns if you are comfortable doing so; but not for the above reason.

I Disagree.

It'll take you longer to draw and drop the first gun, with the added risk of the BG drawing his gun and ending speculation on the merits of a "bait gun", than it would to just draw your pistol and centerpunch the guy twice..... In the "bait gun", there is an observation and decision to be made ..... if you are following Cooper's color codes, the If/Then decision to shoot the guy has already been made, you just are waiting to act ......
 
This sounds retarded. I carry a backup incase I do fumble my gun or some how someone tackles me and I lose my gun, then I go for my bug and stop the threat. If I play football with my gun to lose it, then go for my bug, and lose that... what do I have? nothing.:eek:
 
It sounds foolish and risky to me. The more complicated the plan, the more chances to screw it up.

You fumble around with the bait gun, in the meantime the BG thinks you're armed and acts accordingly? Dangerous and crazy... it might be fine for the movies, but not real life.
 
If a bg has a gun pointed at you, they will most likely shoot you the second you reach for something. Terrible idea IMO.
 
While some may consider this an option or a backup gun, I agree with sparks its adding a variable, that may favor the bg.
 
Contrived set-ups, such as that, make "self defense" questionable. Seems a case could be made for knowingly going into a shoot situation.

Not a good idea.

I have thought of this one:

BG approaches and points a gun at you and says "gimme your money". You say "alright" and then look over his shoulder and say "oh thank god, the cops are here". When he turns to look for the cops that are not there, draw and shoot him.
 
Seems pretty well settled that it's a lousy idea. Can't predict the BG's actions.

Doesn't seem to be anything more to discuss.
