Baikal Over/unders??

Has anyone had experience with these shotguns? Are they any good? I have handled a couple, and while they are obviously not Beretta's or Browning's, they seem ok for the money. Any info on these would be appreciated. Shake

Hi Shake,

Don't know too much, but here goes.

Baikal's are Russian made shotguns and I think that the same factory sold them under more than one name. I believe that "Vostock" is another. The ones you handled were probably made before the end of the Cold War. They were known to be the cheapest ever. However, I believe that they were reasonably well built. They may not have on expensive walnut or have engraving like the o/u's built in the free world. The one that I shot didn't have ejectors and went on safety every time you opened it to reload.

What they did have, were wonderful barrels that threw great patterns and ate up clay targets.

I believe that they are good guns, probably worth more than you pay for them. However, if I were going to buy one, I would shoot it first and go over it like I would do for any used gun purchase that I was considering.

ENJOY SHOTGUNNING and try ISSF Skeet.

The Russian shotguns(u/o and sXs) are well known for good value,cheap/rough finish and most rugged reliability. RE-sale is difficult.

My opinion is ...they are good field-guns(EG auto-safety etc), but for trap in the same price-range try the top Brazillian marques or the cheaper Italians such as:- Bettinsoli, Franchi and Lamber(?)/Zoli.

Has anyone else noticed people digging in the archives and posting in response to questions posted years and years old as if it was just asked? So here I go being a sheeple. I just bought a Baikal O/U and it's a great gun for the money. :D

You could check out verona as well. Lower end italian shotgun sold at dick's and a few other places. It's the only o/u I've ever owned, but I love it.

re: Baikal's

I work par time in a gun shop. Baikal's are a very good shotgun in my views.
I have shot one, and handled many in the store.
They are made overseas and imported thru EAA European American Armory in Southern Florida. The company has a very good reputation for its cutomer service as well.

But nothing can Top my Benelli!!!!!

I bought both the 12 gauge O/U (28 inch) and the 20 guage O/U (28 inch) Baikals last year. Great guns for the money and very reliable so far. You can find one NIB on gunbroker.com for just a bit over $400 right now. They seem to be built like tanks, have a single selective trigger, and decent ejectors. I don't care much about the resale of these guns because I don't have any plans to ever sell them. Oh, they handle very nicely and come up to my shoulder just right. Good luck!
