Bagged a Black Bear!!

With my full size Ford van. Poor critter. A female black bear intercepted my van traveling 63mph on I66.

State Trooper allowed me to take possession of the carcass.

The bear meat is in the freezer, and the hide is waiting the taxidermist.

My wife is threatening to sell my tree stand, bow, and rifles. I have more luck with vehicles!!

Where at in VA, Dogger? I'd love to go bear hunting, but no one that I know has encountered one on land that I can hunt. I've encountered 2 in the Shenandoah NP.

I was on I66 just east of Marshall, VA. That bear appeared out of a wooded median and intercepted me like a Patriot missile. I didn't even have time to get a foot on the brake.

The funny thing is that just two weeks ago I suffered $1500 damage from a deer strike, so I was intentionally driving slow (63mph) to avoid another one.

Zero damage to the van. The bear was moving fast and low and took the full impact of the big steel bumper.

A buddy of mine hikes in the Shenandoah Park and has seen over twenty black bear just on hikes.

I have heard reports of significant bear populations as far east as the western fringes of Prince William County.

Anyway, will have some bear for dinner on Saturday... will report out on the recipe...

Poodleshooter, I have seen bear scat on the eastern slopes of Massanutten mountain near Front Royal. I deer hunt there during rifle season; will keep my eyes open for you.

With all the talk we get about Bear stopping rounds I guess we just found the ultimate Bear thumper. One shot kill I presume. I wonder how manny foot pounds of energy the ole family wagon is delevering at the muzzle??

IN my Physics class We calculated this I don't know the numbers right off hand. But basically a 150 grain bullet at 3000 fps vs. a 1500 pound vehicle at 55 mph. The vehicle was like ten times the energy. I will look up the exact numbers later tonight.

Think about it like this you stand behind a silouhette on (frictionless) rails and the bullet hits the plate or the car hits the plate both giving a 100% transfer which one would you like to have hit you.

Dug out the notes and it is a good thing cause my memory was a bit foggy, but here goes

A 13,000 N car (~3000lb) going 30m/s (61mph) carries 5.97 x 10^5 Joules

A 270 grain bullet moving at 1000 m/s (~3200 fps) carries 8760 Joules of energy.

This means that the car has about 68 times more energy than the bullet and the bullet used is a pretty hefty one at a good clip.

AHHH physics gotta love it

What's a joule?

Here's my stab at it..

The FPE formula is velocity X velocity X the weight of the bullet in grains divided by 450240.

So, 3000 lb vehicle X 7000 gr. per lb = 21000000 gr.
60 mph X 5280 feet per mile = 316800 feet per hr. or 88 FPS (?)

So 88FPS X 88FPS X 21000000 / 450240 = 361194 FPE!!!!!

Now THATS stopping power!!!:D

I aint too good in math, but it sounds right. You edumecated folks'll correct me if'n I's wrong, I'm sure.:D

Good shot, dude! Did they give you a meat donation certificate? We got to keep a roadkill deer once and the cop gave us a certificate to keep it legal eagle.

My Stepfather cooked some up last week -- used a pot roast recipe with 'taters.

Delicious!!

:)

Yes, with my van it was a one shot kill.

And the trooper gave me legal possession of the bear.

My van is sorta heavy to lug into the woods though...

Next hunt will be with my 7mm mauser.

:p

Hey Dogger,

I drove down that section of I66 this weekend on the way to GWNF for some grouse hunting. I66 looks like a warzone right now. There are bloody carcasses every few miles, it seems.

While hunting, I saw lots of bear sign, broken berry trees, etc. I think the population has grown.

Chris

My brother in law sighted bear scat while we were hunting turkeys at Little North Mountain WMA this weekend. Plenty of berry mass in it.

Mtnbkr, two years ago I drove from Manassas to Front Royal and counted 11 or 12 dead deer carcasses just on my side of I66. You are right about the carnage -- a LOT of wildlife in this part of Va. I just need to figure out how to get them with rifle or bow...
