Bad shotgun ejector design

I have a Sears 20GA simi-auto shotgun that I've have had common ejector jamming from day one. Taking a close look at it, the ejector bar starts to push the casing out when the shell is already a half inch inside of the ejector opening. This pretty much just bounces it back into the chamber and the next round traps it. Seems to me the ejector should start while the casing still has a clear shot though the opening. I have it all apart now and there is nothing broken or missing. Short of getting a new gun, what kind of mods would be recommended?
 
Your problem is more likely related to a worn extractor or a weak extractor spring than the design of the shotgun. That style of ejector is common to many shotguns.
 
There is a small dent in the housing where the ejector bar hits, but it's maybe .005-.008 deep. The bar doesn't look warn at all, I can still see the shear marks when it was stamped out. I only have a return spring and and the base grip spring. So it's in good shape.

This style is common? Doesn't make sense to eject a casing directly into the housing instead of into the air.
