bad guy tactics 101

I was watching the inside San Quentin Prison show on tv, and saw something interesting. They interviewed a guy who liked to do home invasions. He said that they would divide and conquer in the home, each one taking a room to overwhelm the home owners.

Made me start thinking of how bad guys act in home invasions? I have a family, and have a home with every bedroom occupied.

What should my response/plan be (other than grab the gun)?

Dogs, alarms, good locks, motion sensoring lights. (First line of defense, keeping the bad guys away from what you value)

__Bad guys don't like being caught. Head them off at the pass. Security cameras outside and inside are cheap insurance. Strong doors and locks. Motion sensor alarms. The last thing an intruder wants is camera/action/lights. Them being detected gives you time to pick up that gun and then the phone. I often move my cameras around so bad guys never know for sure where they all are.

It seems to me like most of the home invasions involve the sale of narcotics. So don't sell narcotics, and don't store narcotics in your house. And then you probably won't have to worry about a home invasion.

Get them all in a predetermined room that has only one access, get them under the best cover you can find or preplanned in that room. Make sure that room has a phone and have your wife or children call 911 while you are the guardian. Obviously the room has to be big enough for all of you and location of the room is important, you don't want to choose a room right in the middle of the hallway or something. If it's at the end like a main bedroom or something, that will make the invader have to come down the hall to you, your kind of channelling him.

You can announce that you are armed and that you called the police but don't go out, if he is dumb or brazen enough to come in, that will be your "hot gates", only one way in and directly in your line of fire.

Oh, I'm no expert on home invasion, that's what I came up with, hope it makes sense to you.

That's only mostly the case in urban neighborhoods, criminals know of other criminals and will take their "earnings" by force, no honor among thieves.

But there are raiders who specifically drive out of their ghetto to more upscale or middle class neighborhoods specifically for the purpose of home invasion. I think this is more frequent especially during the holidays, where people may have gone to visit families and such.

Around my neighborhood, there's been a rash of break ins lately, and I suspect that most likely the intruders were not from this part of the city. Most of the time it's just "I wanna break in and they do it" but sometimes they can be more professional and actually do some research on your home. There also have been in the past here, invaders who posed as utility men, policemen, and salesmen, the elderly are especially vulnerable to these "false" occupations it seemed.

Well I don't sell drugs, but it seems like that doesn't matter when you read the rifleman. Perp breaks into wrong house, doesn't matter to that homeowner being asked for drugs they don't have!

Thanks for the info so far. Much has helped. I want to tailor the discussion to bad guy tactics in home invasions and responses.

home invasions

Here in Wichita Falls bad guys target homes of older people or single women with kids. Mostly dark back yards and/or shrubs that hide the backdoor. Bad guys crashed in back door and by the time the owners could get up they had men with guns in the bedroom.

No alarms, no dogs, no well lit backyards.

Four were caught by police and it has stopped for now. Surprisingly no one was shot.

Even the cops pick the wrong house from time to time. Seem reasonable to assume that the crooks won't be as careful as the cops when it comes to addresses. ;)
