bad batch of .308 ammo,pics,link,info

Holy Geez!

What do you guys think would happen if this round was fired out of a heavy barreled Remington 700? Would the bolt be able to take the detonation? I recently had a 8mm Mauser split down to just past the shoulderin my 98 and I couldn't tell that anything was wrong until I ejected the shell and looked at it. I'm thinking that a bolt-action would better handle something like this, but I could be wrong.

FWIW, I posted a quickie "analysis" on the gunandknife site saying that I think a barrel defect, not bad ammo was involved. I think the barrel split first, allowing the case to split. The case head is intact. Had the round detonated, the case would have dissolved. Further, there is no sign that I could see of gas loose in the action. The bolt held, and the trigger group seems OK. The splitting barrel broke the receiver apart. This type of breaking is common when cast receivers let go, though I don't know that a forged receiver would have fared that much better. I think a Remington 700 would have held, but then, as I say, I am not sure there was an ammo problem at all.

Just my .02.
