Backpacking with gun in MO?

I do a bunch of hiking/backpacking in Missouri where I live. I would like to start carrying my handgun in my backpack with me just in the odd event that I would need it to ward off a wild animal or what ever else I may run into. Do I need to have my CCW to carry a handgun in a backpack? What about if the gun it in full view being carried in a hip holster?

If you are carrying 'concealed, upon or about your person' as the law states it, you need a concealed carry permit. A backpack would normally conceal a pistol. If you are carrying your pistol openly, you need no carry permit but need to be aware of the places you can't go while armed.
