Back to Springfield....waaah.

The M1A Scout has to go back for repairs. I should have known that 9/11/01 wasn't a good day for a purchase! I talked to both, Springfield and Fed ex today- It is not a good time to be shipping guns. Hopefully it will arrive under the cover of darkness. I also hope the apocalypse won't happen now that I'm down to .22's and and handguns.:D

The operating rod is hitting the rear base of the forward mounted scope rail (located between the barrel and gas tube). It actually sheared a good chunk of metal from the base of the mount. Kind of strange considering that the forward mount is one of the key features of this rifle. Even stranger, it still functioned very well.

The process of buying/receiving this rifle was a long and strange process (too long of a story to relate here and now). I was finally able to pick it up on the day of the attacks. Then this happened.

The folks at FED EX were great BTW. I talked guns with the two clerks the whole time. Both of them had made recent purchases also. I ended up shipping it Standard Overnight, but what the heck, after paying what I did for the rifle, another $34 isn't a huge deal (insurance included). Springfield should reimburse me for some or all of that. Take care.

damn, i haven't shot mine yet, just lots of living room time. I hope i don't get the same results as you?!

Yours is not the first to go back for QC issues. Mine did too.

Why did you send it overnight? I hope that it was just your choice. Fed Ex's regs don't call for overnighting of rifles, only handguns. I've send many rifles via Fed Ex Ground...service was supurb.

Steve: Overnight was my choice. I was told by Fed Ex and Springfield not to outwardly identify the contents of the shipment...period. The ground form required disclosure and after the events of last week, I didn't feel like this was a good time to leave the space blank or to be creative.

The Fed Ex clerk did tell me that Ground is not against regs but he STRONGLY recommended Overnight.

I also talked to the Manager of a Mail Boxes etc. today and he recommended Overnight as well. He also warned me to follow the firearm shipping rules to the letter this week or expect some "suits" at my door very soon.

Bottom line - I was feeling a little paranoid and $34 seemed a small price to pay.

chiz45: Pull the bolt back with your right hand - slowly let it move forward while lightly pressing on the front of the Op rod with your right thumb. Do you feel it make contact with the base of the scope rail? Mine was fairly obvious, it even jumped out a bit when it hit the rail mount , but I didn't/don't know enough about M1A's to think it unusual.
