Back and Forth with bore brush?

when I started shooting, I read that the bore should be cleaned in one direction only, and preferably from the back. Since then, I have talked to many shooters who clean back and forth. Beretta seems to support the back and forth by supplying a one piece brush that has to be pulled out since the brush tip cannot be removed. I also have a bore snake and it works well, but doesn't get everything. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I've always done the back-and-forth when using a brush. So far as I could ever tell (reduction in accuracy is the only clue, I guess) I've never hurt anything. I've never seen any accumulatin of scratches on the bore of any gun.

Where I've always been very careful is to be sure I don't booger up the end of the bore. I always use the brass guide-cone with the stainless steel rod I use on rifles. On pistols, since aluminum is softer than steel, it's less of a problem. When possible, as with auto pistols and bolt action rifles, I clean from the chamber end of the barrel.

If you can it is best to clean from the back of the barrel instead of the front. This is due to the likelyhood of damaging the crown of the muzzle due to careless cleaning techniques. On precision rifles that can't be cleaned from breech, it is not uncommon to use a rod guide on the cleaning rod to protect the muzzle.
