B Square mount on a Dan Wesson .44

I need to put a scope on a 8" Dan Wesson SS .44 mag barrel. Can anyone advise me about the Non-drilled mount versus the drilled mount. Will the non-drilled mount hold a zero ? Will it really stay put with 300 grain hunting loads ? Anybody's 2 cents.......?

scope mount

Do you have a barrel with a vent rib? If you do, I put the B-Square see thru channel mount on my Taurus .44. Then I can use either iron sights or scope. I added Weigand rings and a Simmons 2x scope and has lasted over a thousand rounds.

goodshot,

I can't speak directly to your combination, but I can tell you about mine.

I had a vent rib .357, that I mounted a heavy 1X4 scope, using Burris clamp on mounts. After 10's of thousands of heavy to very heavy rounds, I never even had to tighten screws.

However... I've spoken with the current folks at Dan Wesson a couple of times, and they strongly advise against "clamp on" style mounts. I take it they have had lots of problems with them. They or any local smith can tap your shroud for their current screw on mount, which they seem very confident it.

Good Luck...

Joe

I bought a M27-2 with one of the no drill B Square mounts and scope. The mount replaced the rear sight and clamped to the front sight with 6 allen screws, 3 on each side. It held it's zero well, but the screws have seriously scarred the front sight.

The kind that clamp to a vent rib barrel may not damage the finish like this one did, but I'd stay away from the kind that clamp to the front sight.

Thanks kimbercomp, John and Joe. I don't mind drilling and tapping, so I am leaning that way anyway. I thought if it absolutely didn't matter that I would get whatever came along. It sounds like Dan Wesson would rather sell a mount that they know will work reliably. I plan on just leaving the scope on the barrel shroud indefinately for hunting. I have a 4" barrel that I use for everything else but hunting. Although these big wheelguns are a tad on the large size, once you take it out of the holster they are a joy to shoot. I obviously enjoy shooting mine over most of my other handguns except maybe my .22s. gs
