B-Day present: Which Rifle/Caliber?

It's my old man's birthday later this month, and while he's got a good collection of handguns and some medium range rifles (.30-.30, Mini-14) he's lacking a good long distance banger. What are your thoughts on rifles and calibers? This would be primarily for informal target shooting, and he's in the Northeast, so if he decides to go hunting, the game will be relatively small. I was looking at a Remington 700 in .270. I like the .243 myself, but he wants something heavier. Thanks.

When I think long range, 300 Win Mag is the first thing that comes to mind. :D

Humm, I have a LN Savage 110FP .300 Win Mag. Choate tool Varmint stock and Harris Bipod with Leupold one piece base, rings unknow and a Simmon 4-16x40 scope...if you would be interest. You would not have to worry about the gift of a used rifle cause this one was babied..about 50 rounds in all.

Email me.

Well, what kind of guns is your pop into? If he likes bolt guns, the above suggestions are sound indeed. My old man would flip over a half decent garand. His era. Grew up hearing great things about that rifle and has wanted one probably ever since. Kind of like putting a '53 Corvette in the driveway, but a lot cheaper. Just an idea. CMP $500 bucks.
