Statement from Rep. Carolyn McCarthy on the Shootings in PA and UT
Tuesday February 13, 2007
Yesterday we learned of more unnecessary deaths from gun violence in Philadelphia, PA and Salt Lake City, UT. I am saddened to hear of these events and have introduced legislation that if enacted will prevent further violence.

In Philadelphia, a gunman opened fire on his colleagues using an AK-47 assault rifle he legally purchased. These dangerous weapons, which are intended to hit multiple targets in a short period of time, were allowed back on our streets when the federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004. The deaths in Philadelphia could have been prevented if Congress had done its job of protecting the homeland and renewed the assault weapons ban.

I have again introduced legislation to permanently ban assault weapons. These weapons have no practical use. They are not used by hunters for sport or by individuals for self-defense. They are intended to kill as many individuals as possible in a short amount of time and have no place on our streets. The unfortunate situation in Philadelphia could have been avoided if Congress stood up to the gun lobby in 2004.

In Salt Lake City, a young man opened fire in a crowded mall, killing more than 10 individuals. It appears the shooter was not mentally stable and police are still investigating how he obtained the weapons.

It is vital that the background check records are current and comprehensive. I have introduced HR 297, the NICS Improvement Act that would strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. These records let gun dealers know when an individual should not be allowed to purchase a firearm. Improving the quality of these records will keep guns out of the wrong hands and make our country safer.

I am deeply saddened by yesterday’s events. I remain committed to passing common sense legislation to prevent further acts of gun violence.

Sounds like she could be going after anything other than single-shot guns. *sigh*

I bought a new 1911 today just to spite this bill.

If this gets passed in 1 house, I am buying a 50BMG rifle. If it gets passed in 2 houses, I am putting a class III silencer on it.

If it gets signed, I know I did the right thing.

:barf:

While e-mailing each other is fun (misery loves company), it does no good. Contacting our representatives by e-mail, phone or letter may not change a vote, but doing so, and then encouraging others to do the same, might. Have you contacted your rep. today? Yes, I did.

are handguns affected by the bill?

Nope. Those will be on the next one. She needs the support of a few handgun owners to get this through. Then the former assault weapon owners will be disinterested enough to let the handgun ban go through unapposed. Have patience my friend... they'll get you too.

As bad as the election went for republicans, it could have gone worse for gun owners. While a few republicans got ousted, in most places they were replaced with gun friendly democrats so I don't think this will go far.

What realy gets my goat is that all it would take is someone pointing out that a post ban AK can do the same amount of damage. That and for ever AK that is sold in the US less than one half of one percent of one percent of those is used in a crime.

McCarthy is a lying sack of crap. No AK was used in the Philly shooting.

An investor who killed three people and himself at a marketing company was upset about losing money in a failed real-estate venture and told his victims to "say your prayers" before he opened fire, police said Tuesday.

Vincent J. Dortch, 44, of Newark, Del., brought two handguns to a Monday night meeting he had organized under the pretense that he had another investor who wanted in on the venture, authorities said.

Three people died and one was seriously injured as a man opened fire in an office complex in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The man, who had a semi-automatic handgun, shot the men in the conference room, also shot at police, who returned fire. The gunman then moved behind a door and shot himself, police said.

typical antigunners, exploiting tragedy for political gain, not to mention lying in the process. the philly shooting wasnt with an assault weapon, and neither was salt lake, salt lake was a shotgun and a handgun. but she is right in assuming most people wont take the effort to look the original stories up and expose her lies. in both cases, a ccw could have saved lives (did in salt lake, off duty leo) and i bet shes against ccws too. assault weapons dont kill people, stupid democrats do!:barf:

I'm going to be sending out lots of emails tomorrow, and not just to politicians, but friends that are pro RKBA, but not as active in current legislation and asking them to write their reps.
