Autos

After using sixguns for 40+ years I'm trying to get a handle on a couple semi-autos. These things are a completely different animal. Fired these targets last week offhand as quickly as the sights aligned. I really like the M&P Compact. So far only 350 rounds fired but once I'm proficient it will be my CCW if thing keep going well. Been using the CZ 75 for a truck gun & targets of opportunity [mostly rocks].

THEY'RE JUST A PASSING FANCY, LYNN. In a month you'll be using them for paper weights and carrying a real gun, a SIXGUN, again !

I too was mostly a revolver guy, and mostly DA only. I was good but only two handed. One-handed and things got a bit rougher.

Over the years I had dabbled in autos but never seriously.

Now I'm committed to them, specifically the Beretta 92FS and its cousins and the 1911. (Never did warm up to the Glock or other striker fired pistols though I tried them for as much as a year.)

As one writer commented in a book I had, it takes a lot more work to
shoot a DA revolver well than an auto.

Although I usually carry a single stack (Shield or XDS), my 9C is my favorite gun to shoot. It's the one I'd grab if I knew I was headed trouble.

Learn to shoot a DA revolver and most other trigger systems will become child's play. I try to shoot my Model 19 every weekend. Working on the trigger control on that makes a noticeable improvement in my DA/SA semiautos.

Ditto. When I really decided I wanted to shoot my DA revolvers well and put in enough practice to be decent with them, my autoloader shooting got better too.

If you are a DA revolver guy and interested in autoloaders, give a good hard look to the Sig P250... seems the ones who like that one generally have a lot of time in DA wheelguns.

Autos are a different animal. Fired the 7 yard drill on the 2 targets below. One with a sixgun, the other with the Compact 9. Looking to become proficient with a striker fired system.

I'll keep the sixguns for sure.

It takes a dedicated training session, with a real expert on the subject, to fully appreciate the semi-auto pistol.
Not that they are always the only choice.
It would not be prudent to abandon a life time of practice and experience with revolvers.

I never understood why some revolver guys have such an aversion to semi-autos?

I've owned and shot revolvers and semi-autos. Semi-autos are easier for me to carry and operate; but that doesn't mean I'm adverse to owning/carrying revolvers.

One aversion to autos by revolvers guys, I think, is that many auto guys seem to be "spray and pray" types and that makes the revolver guys look on with disdain.

I think that's just a poor stereotype. If you have more rounds you will likely fire more rounds. You're going to shoot until the threat is stopped. When you're running on adrenaline it can take a moment for the brain to realize when that is and then get yourself to stop, especially depending on your training level. With a revolver I can keep pulling that trigger but I'll still only fire (typically) 6 rounds until I reload.

TunnelRat,

I'm talking about seeing guys with autos at indoor/or outdoor ranges. It's a reason some ranges impose a two or three second rule between rounds. Too
many target holders, etc. whacked by errant bullets.

Back in the early 80's I had no autos just
revolvers. So I goes out and buys a commander (IIRC).
Shot it once, the whole damn gun moved in my hand.
Took it right back, don't know what I bought after that
but i do know that I can shoot more precisely with a good
revolver than a good 1911 SA
