Autos in shoulder holsters?

I never even wanted to try a shoulder holster. However, now that I have purchased this DeSantis nylon ankle holster and it is so comfortable, I think about it sometimes. DeSantis makes a nylon shoulder holster that I believe my Glock would ride very well in. It also fits a couple more types of autos.
So, I'd like to ask if anyone carries in a nylon shoulder holster? It's lighter than leather and would hide under a windbreaker jacket.

Thanks,
KR

I used to. Found it very uncomfortable. Was using an Uncle Mike's nylon shoulder rig with a Glock 19. Didn't conceal as well as I thought it would...bottom of the jacket had to be kept closed, any breeze would reveal it otherwise. Also, the lump in the armpit was difficult to get used to.

Shoulder holsters are rarely comfortable. I've used an old Bianchi Ranger nylon rig for a 4516 and a P220. While it is less distracting than some others I've owned, it still wears on the shoulders and back of the neck at the end of a long day. Driving, it gives good access if arranged just right, but the seat belt strap, on top of another strap on your shoulder, gets more than a little uneasy after a few miles.

Disreguard nylon rigs. I carry a full size 1911 in a Galco Miami Classic leather shoulder rig, it is very comfortable and invisable. When it come to holsters don't scrimp, spend the extra cash it is well worth it. Another thing about shoulder rigs, if it needs some sort of tie-down to work don't buy it. A quality rig should not need a tie-down.

What V.A Cop said. When I do use a shoulder rig,(very cold weather), it's a Miami Classic. Lou Alessi makes some nice ones too. The nylon rigs just plain suck...

I have used a Galco "Miami Classic" shoulder rig and found it to be fairly comfortable. I prefer shoulder holsters when riding. A friend of mine tried my Galco but didn't like the thin straps. He bought an SSII system. The only difference between the two is that the SSII straps are cut wider over the shoulders. He likes his, I like mine.

My Galco Miami shoulder holster is very comfortable. I like shoulder holsters for many tactical reasons:
- Comfortable sitting in a car
- Easy to access in a car
- If I am in the field carrying a rifle the holstered pistol is out of the way
- I can cross my arms with a hand under my jacket, on my handgun, concealed but ready to draw. To draw from other places can telegraph my move.
- Handgun on one side is nicely balanced by two loaded mags on the opposite side.

Good luck!

I too, have a Galco Miami. Comfortable, adjustable, and functional it is. Great holster, if yer not looking for concealment. A shoulder rig is only gonna work (keep the firearm concealed) for very large framed persons. I'm 5'8", 165 & my stumpy lil P-239 sticks out front & back when I'm standing straight up. When I lean forward, I'd might as well have a shotgun tucked under my coat.

Had an Uncle Mike's for my Radom 9mm.

Didn't care for it much. After a short period of time the straps would ride up and cut the living hell out of my neck.

I've got leather shoulder figure 8 shoulder holsters for my 4" and 2.5" Model 19 S&Ws, and one for my HK P7M13.

One of the most critical points about a long-term comfort with a leather shoulder holster is having one with WIDE straps that go over the shoulder.

That way the weight of the gun is distributed over a much broader area, the holster doesn't move around nearly as much, and your neck and shoulders don't get nearly as tired as quickly. The Galco Miami Vice style might look really good, but the straps over the shoulders aren't nearly wide enough, and you get really uncomfortable with them on after a couple of hours.

I've worn a P7M13 with an off-side spare magazine for upwards of 10 hours without undue discomfort or shoulder or neck pain.

As far as I'm concerned, a leather rig with wide straps is the ONLY way to go.

Kentucky Rifle,
Check out DeSanti's website at www.desantisholster.com They have a section with stuff at discount prices. Picked up a Millenium New York Undercover Rig with the wide straps for $35 with no mag pouches. See what they have left, you might find something you can use.

Kentuc, there are comfortable should rigs. As a LEO I carried a G23 in a horsehide Ted Blocker Lifeline for several years. Don't forget to get the double mag pouches so that it counterbalances the weapon. The Monarch is a good one too.

Having the pistol on your belt is quicker and more secure. However, if you are set on a shoulder rig spend the $ and do it right the first time and you'll save money in the long run.

During the winter I sometimes carry a 1911 in a Miami Classic. It works well while driving or under some type of coat. I prefer IWB most of the time. It is kind of specialized, but sometimes a shoulder holster is a better way to go. Watch-Six
