This question has probably been asked before...but..I have a chance to pick one up for around $300....are these any good or would I be getting just another clone??????
Thanks,
Dan

I had one for a few years. Most people here are going to give you a "thumbs down", but I kinda liked mine. It was my first 1911 style pistol.
It didn't have the fit and finish of a Colt, Springfield or other brand, but it shot well and was reliable.
Now this gun was purchased (and sold) long before Kahr bought Auto Ordinance...so I don't know if there has been any changes.

I sold it to buy a Colt 1911A1 several years ago.

I had an AO 1911, bought it many years ago and it never was right. Sloppy fit, poor accuracy, poor reliability, did not compare well with Colt or Springfield.

That being said, the new AO made by Khar is supposed to be much better. Yesterday, I handled one with a Commander length slide. It was the new production model and seemed to be well fitted and finished. Still not a Colt, but a lot closer to a Springfield Mil-spec. It did have small sights, something that Khar should, a maybe will, change.

About six months ago I handled a new AO, supposedly made by Khar, that was horrible. It seemed to be just like the old AO guns. I did notice that the Commander I saw yesterday was not made in West Hurley, NY. This could be a clue as to exactly when the gun was made and from what parts. Those West Hurley guns were made from the cheapest parts available and were frequently out of spec.

If you decide on buying an AO, give it a thorough examination and compare it to a Springfield Mil-spec, if possible.

How many of you would buy a cheap SIG or HK clone? Yet folks buy cheap Colt 1911 clones all the time. If you're going to buy a 1911, get one from one of the three top manufacturers: Colt, Springfield, or Kimber.

I've never owned an AO but looked at one several years ago.I didn't like the fit and finish and opted for a SA instead. Some gun writers claim the newer ones from Kahr are better quality but as dsk posted above,You're better off buying a good Colt,Springfield or Kimber.I've got one each and am very happy with them all.tom.

I just bought a new AO Deluxe about a month ago, and have been pleased with it so far! I wrote a range report if you want more details on it.

I should mention that it's the first 1911 that I've ever owned, and I've only shot one or two before I bought this one, so I am not that familiar with nicer, (much) more expensive 1911's. However, I think that for the price, I didn't go wrong, and I don't need any of the fancy upgrades that most people throw on their 1911's - I'm not left handed, I don't get hammer bite even with the stock grip safety, I don't shoot JHP's (can't afford any anyways :-p). The sights work well, the trigger is *very* nice compared to any of my other guns, and it's accurate - I hit things I aim at, although I haven't remembered to bring paper targets out with me.
