Auto Assist knife advice.

Hi,
I am looking for a smaller to medium sized auto assist of top quality (nothing "custom", more like a Benchmade or Ken Onion design).

I prefer a "point down" clip and one that is easy to open.

Blade type is not that important, as long as it is solid.

Any favorites? Any quality ideas? I am not interested in large knives.

Ata the outset let me say that I am an avid fan of Ken Onion Assisted Opening line of knifes. My current EDC knife is this composite blade 1660CB. It is simply the sharpest knife I have ever owned. simply Marvelous!

I'm also a big fan of Ken Onion/Kershaw knives. I've owned the affordable Blackout model (under $50) for years and put it through some rough service in the field, aboard ships, doing electrical work and tons of other random jobs it really wasn't intended for (and I'd rather not admit using a knife to do!), and it has performed all-around. Quick single-hand opening, locks solid, and the action is easy to clean if you get oil/grease/grit/sand/etc. My only complaint is no lanyard hole!!

I haven't held one, but I've been reading rave reviews about offerings from Extrema Ratio of Italy, both for the fixed blade and folders. Their "flagship" model is the diving knife, but they have several others that look great and probably perform well too. Double or single edged, with a bunch of options, non-slip grip. They have some other interesting models worth checking out.

I did forget to include that one "must have" aspect to the knife I am looking for is a non slip grip.
Good advice so far, please keep it coming!
 
i've got the Kershaw LEET (by Ken Onion) with the partial serrated blade at work. i liked it so much i bought another one with the straight blade to carry.

paid $75 for the first one off the Snap On truck (also has 'Snap On' on one side) and i paid $39 for the second from cheaper then dirt, i did a lot of searching around and they beat everyone else's price by at least $15.

Ditto to Booker T...The Ken Onion Kershaw model he pictures is excellent....I have two of the exact model..I believe they were around $60 each....They are always ready and there is some adjustment available to them....not a lot of pocket dust gets in them and they work solid....I have had the Leek model and it seemed to get gummed up in my pocket all the time and I go rid of it...
 
I dislike the Kershaw/Onion assisted opening knives. I've carried quick opening folders since the original "flicket" for the Buck 110 back in the 70s and the onions are a flop in my book. I really wanted to like them and drove 40 miles to buy one. Wasted trip. Every one that they had was stiff. I like the Gerber Presto far better. It's much-much faster and smoother. I like it enough that bought several when they discontinued the smooth edge 3.5" just in case I lost one or two I'd still have spares.

I have two SOG Flash II's and a Twitch II. All very good.

When you say "point down" do you mean when closed or open? To clarify, do you want the pocket clip on the heel of the grip or at the hinge?
 
I'm really fond of my Kershaw Blackout. I've got a a handful of knives, and this is my absolute favorite. I love the feel of the handle, I love the sharpness of the blade, and I love the sound it makes when it opens. :-) For $50 (at cheaperthandirt, for the serrated model), you can't go wrong.
 
While researching NJ laws, I came across this site which lists the lookups for the laws of EVERY STATE:

It refers to "automatic knives", but be warned that the definition of automatic varies from state to state. In NJ, 'spring assisted' is specifically mentioned in the law as illegal.
 
I have a Kershaw 1670BLK and like it OK. As long as you chose to carry/deploy it with the right hand, I'd think that it'd do whatever needed doing just dandy and in short order.

You can request spare clips and screws, as well as the removal tool from Kershaw to move the clip from point up to point down carry.

Moving the clip lets you chose from point up to point down carry...but designed for right hand only.

Carry options are limited as there is no provision for mounting the clip on the left grip panel.

Carry on the left side is OK, but just a tad awkward for me.

The 1670 is also kinda thin and 'grippy' in the hand.

It, and the Emerson Commander are the only two recent folder designs that I have personal knowledge of.

Both have their problems, neither is optimum, both are OK..
