Australia telling NRA to hush?

I saw this on one of the talking head shows in a debate over gun control. The pro 2nd guy made reference to the skyrocketing crime in Australia since the gun "buyback". The anti 2nd guy said the Australian gov was trying to get the NRA to stop the "misinformation" campaign. Has anyone else heard of this? I figured the Aussies didn't want any tourists to worry about getting jacked while down there for the Olympics, and didn't want the truth to get out.

I saw a piece on CBS news (w/ Dan Blather) Tuesday night, about the skyrocketing crime rate in London. The piece did not even mention - much less make any connection to - the confiscation of firearms just before crime got so out of control. They did, however, note that that more and more guns were were being used in crimes, and it was getting ugly. Well, go figure. The good guys are disarmed (or prosecuted for not being disarmed), and the bad guys have the run of the house. I think I'll cross Merry Olde England and the Land Down Under off my vacation plans for the foreseeable future. Maybe Teheran and Beirut are offering tourist deals...

Yeah ... a couple of the State AG and the Federal Attorney General got upset about the ads ... along with the left-wing, tree-hugging, yuppie, whale-saving, recycleable anti-gunners. They tried to get them retracted.

Think they got told to "get stuffed". :D

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch, IMHO. ;)

OH!, so the Aussies don't want any info about their escalating crime to be known. That requires an apropiate response.

I have renewed respect for Australia now that I realize that it was one of their own that helped us in our "Revolutionary War". I never realized that they had played such a role and even allowed young kids to use guns. Also, they never miss when they shoot. Wow, those Australians are great! BTW: I gather that Mel Gibson is not a "Me Too" actor when it comes to his view of guns. I do think that he has something against the British. OK..it's all off topic, but so is life.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released June 28 2000:-
"The number of Australians murdered rose 20% in 1999,but other crimes such as manslaughter ,attempted murder, driving causing death, robbery and theft fell.
The data revealed that 342 people were murdered in 1999,an increase of 57 people from 1998.Nearly two-thirds of all murders were committed with some kind of weapon(64%), with 28% using a firearm.Attempted murders were down 7.5% to 358.The crime of manslaughter fell by 17% to 39."
There is more detail on all other crimes which are (mostly) trending down.
The total population of Australia is twenty million people. In comparison the Population of the USA is 260(?)million.
As far as the murder rate is concerned, for Australia it is .0017% (342 people per twenty million)--if the US murder rate were the same as Australia you would have 4446 people murdered each year.
How does your murder rate compare with ours?
