A heavily armed man barricaded inside a home for more than 18 hours surrendered today after firing up to 100 bullets at police.

After lengthy negotiations via a loud hailer, the 40-year-old father-of-two walked from his house on the outskirts of Dapto, near Wollongong, around 2.45pm (AEST), a police spokeswoman said.

He had been holed up inside the garage of the home since 9pm (AEST) yesterday following a domestic dispute.

Armed with three high powered handguns, including a 357 Magnum pistol, he initially forced two police officers to take refuge under their patrol car for three and a half hours.

Meanwhile, two of their colleagues ran to a neighbour's house where they found the gunman's wife and daughters, aged three and seven. No one was wounded during the gunfire.

However, the woman is understood to have been assaulted earlier in the night and was treated for a shoulder injury in hospital.

Fresh teams of tactical response police, negotiators and other emergency service personnel were called in around 9am (AEST) today, with the gunman refusing to budge.

It is believed the former security officer fired a final round from one of his weapons at 6am (AEST), after which police established an ongoing line of communication.

A large area around the house was cordoned off, the neighbourhood evacuated and nearby train services were replaced with buses during the incident.

The spokeswoman said the man remained at the scene where he was being questioned by detectives.
