ATTN: ppl in Arizona, I need advice!

About a month ago my girlfriend delivered a list of possible cities that we would need to relocate to in about two years. (Please refrain from commenting on this :)) Seeing as I am seriously pro-gun, I quickly reduced the list to gun-friendly states.

Now she has set her sights on the Univ. of AZ in Tempe. Now being the North Georgia Redneck that I am, I'm excited/concerned about gun laws in the state of Arizona. It is my understanding that they do not have any provisions that allow for concealed-carry, but open-carry. I'd like to hear from all of you concerning your thoughts on open-carry in this state. I read ...And I did it my way by USP45usp. I'd still like to get some more feedback concerning this issue. I'd also like to hear some more of your open-carry encounters in public.

It seems VERY interesting, but a far-cry different from concealed carry here in GA.

Arizona does have concealed carry. I am not sure of all the laws but it is similar to Texas because it is reciprocal.

There are some pretty good gun shops out there to as well as a little golf. :)

And don't forget, Dillon is in Scottsdale. :)

Perhaps I was wrong.. but if its anything like Texas, it'll cost me an arm just to get the d4mn license.

[and faintly in the distance, I can hear my father say "How much is your life worth to you?"]

Okay, so the $44 I had to pay for a consitutional right is a LOT less than the $100+ you'll have to pay elsewhere.

I'm a broke college student! Give me a break! :D

Concealed carry is a 16 hour course including range time, and they require SSN and fingerprints to get it. I got mine in 3 weeks after submitting the application.

Open carry is generally no problem, but Phoenix is getting more liberalized, and since Tempe is full of out of state students, you will get some looks. The school probably has rules against firearm possession on campus, too.

There are lots of good places to shoot on BLM land; there's plenty of good 4 wheeling (Trail 42 is my favorite in town excursion). Bear Arms is a decent gun shop in Scottsdale, and Dillon Precision is located on Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd between Greenway-Hayden Loop and Hayden Road.

Consider long and hard before moving to Phoenix. It really is bloody hot, and there are right at 3 million residents. I had my fill after 3 years. You might enjoy the University of Arizona in Tucson better. It has a better reputation for engineering anyway.

Cost runs about 150.00 depending on who teaches the classes.

Ahh.. bunch-o college students is CERTAINLY not going to change my opinion. I will be graduating this year with a BS in CompSci. The better-half will be graduating next year with a BS in SpeachPath. She's anxious to get her master's at a nice university. We won't be living on campus, so I will not be concerned with that. Interestingly enough, I can keep my firearm ON CAMPUS assuming that it is locked the entire time on campus.. nice.

As for your hot. I welcome any hot you have. Any dry hot has to be better than any humid hot imaginable. At least, I'm hoping anyway. And about the crowdedness (is that a word?), I'll be coming from Atlanta, so it will be a welcome change I'm sure. :)

Preicate the post though.

KaMaKaZi, ASU is a great school! Here is some text copied from ARS 13-3112:

The person shall carry the permit at all times when the person is in actual possession of the concealed weapon and shall present the permit for inspection to any law enforcement officer on request.

B. A person who fails to carry the permit at all times that the person is in actual possession of a concealed weapon may have the permit suspended. The Department of Public Safety shall be notified of all violations of this section and shall immediately suspend the permit. The permittee shall present the permit to the law enforcement agency or the court. On notification of the presentation of the permit, the department shall restore the permit.

And jumping down a bit

N. An organization shall apply to the Department of Public Safety for approval of its firearms safety training program. The department shall approve a program that meets the following requirements:

Don't knock open carry too fast! Nothing like ridin' your Hog down Camelback Blvd packin' six!
anodes.

There are worse places.

FWIW,
I've experienced 101 degrees in Louisiana and 110 in Phoenix.

I'll take Phoenix any day.

Kamakaze,

Arizona is an open carry state. There are a few infringments such as schools, colleges, federal buildings, and city buildings.

I carry openly 90% of the time and get a few looks and have had a couple of cops drive slowly by as I have been working. I speculate it is because they recieved a call from an out-of-state-sheep (or in-state sheep) about a man with a gun! ;)

Most of the comments I get are from people that initially don't understand the reason for my carrying.

I own and operate a window cleaning company and as I am the chief bottle-washer I'm very visible to the public when I am working.

"What do you need a gun to clean windows for?" is the question I get most of the time.

My response is, "I don't need a gun to clean windows, I need a squeegee. And my carrying a gun is not work related because I carry even when I am NOT working!"

Most of them concede the point by saying, "yeah, you never know any more..." or some such drivel.

I've had some fun with people, too. My response to this very question from one guy was, "You obviously don't know what it's like to work around here!"

He paled slightly and looked quickly around as he excaimed, "You kidding.... right?" :D

Another question I've been asked is, "Shot anyone lately?"

The tease as I look at them hungrily, "No, but I'm looking for my next victim!" (Disclaimer: I only do this with my customers whom I know I can tease.)

At first I was very self-conscious (sp) because I was afraid that people would take me for some macho blow-hard that had to show his manliness by carrying a gun. But after a while I got used to the looks and questions. Many people won't even notice it. I've been carrying openly for nearly 3 years and as early as last week one of my customers just noticed. :D

It's a part of me now. My wife rarely asks me anymore if I'm carrying when we go somewhere where it is more prudent to conceal.

I carry when we travel, and I disregard unconstitutional law when I need to enter those places where by "law" it is forbidden and my chances are good for NOT getting caught.

One day I'll make the confrontation, but it will be on my terms, not their's.

Governer Hull is not pro-gun having signed into law "Shannon's law" (concerning discharging a gun into the air, which was already illegal.) and the law that forbids open carry in certain parks, and allows cities to create a patchwork (read:trap)of carry laws within their own boundries contrary to state law.

We are fighting to keep the californicators on their leashes so that we can regain our freedoms.

There is an initiative to do away with the state income tax.

All in all, it's a good conservative state.

Heat? I guess it is all relative. In my opinion the "dry heat" in Phoenix went out the window in the 40s when they started serious irrigation and damn furriners started growin grass lawns. Left there in 42, was startin to get crowded. Just a few days ago it was 117, humid and smoggy. Trip to VA or Dillon on occaision, nothing like driving heavy traffic in the rain with temp over 100f. Always makes drivin up the mountain to get home a pleasure.

Open carry is a pleasure and ccw good for any weapon.

Sam I am, grn egs n packin

Nikita Khrushchev predicted confidently in a speech in Bucharest, Rumania on June 19, 1962 that: " The United States will eventually fly the Communist Red Flag...the American people will hoist it themselves."

PS...
State paperwork runs about 50.00. Course fees vary wildly. The 150 quote by beemerb is all inclusive except for ammunition. That particular instructor goes way beyond the minimum requirements. His course will improve the practicle shooting of nearly any student regardless of experience. You learn a lot and have a lot of fun. Well worth it in my opinion.

Consider Flagstaff. They have Northern Arizona University and it is much cooler. It also snows early and the snow stays late, but the pines smell great.

If you get there try La Kachina for their green over green burrito.

First point to be a pain is that the University of Arizona is in Tucson and Arizona State University is in Tempe.

The CCW class is not quite as pricy as it used to be. I have a friend here in Tucson who teaches them for $50. The license itself costs $50.

Open carry is not too unusual but you do get looks.

Just for the record, I only glanced at all the postings here. One thing that was not brought out was that NO Arizona K-12, Community College or University allows the carrying of firearms on campus or at any College sponsored event. I'm not sure how they pull it off up in Yavapi Community College that has a gunsmith school. A fast way to get kicked out of college is to get packing.

Sorry, it's the plain truth. How do I know? I work for one of the colleges here in AZ.

Yes, your humidity is why I left the east coast and will never return ( same with Texas :)), but you may be changing your tune when you touch down at Sky Harbor Airport in August as the air from the oven burns your throat :). Also due to the large amount of golf courses in Phoenix, humidity is steadily rising over the years. The temp spikes are certainly bearable, but what got to me was the months in a row of 100+ weather. The monsoons normally hit in August, but this year has been different. If you're buying a house, get a good termite inspection. Everyone gets them eventually in Phoenix.

The highway system is just getting started in Phoenix, so cross town trips are a real beach. By the time you're there Hwy101 will have been mostly completed, which helps.

For a local gun range, check out Caswell's. Prices are reasonable.

Nah. $69 to $99.

Check out http://www.packing.org/state/arizona/. I would not go with open carry, as I am personally of the opinion that the fewer people who know I am carrying, the safer I feel. Also be aware of carrying on college property, and know that college property is not always clearly defined. I was in a pickle once while at CWU in Ellensburg. Long story short-I was riding my bike on wrong side of the road (inside lane college property/outside lane city property). Only got a warning, but also the info on various streets that are considered part of college property.

Hope this helps.

Mike
