Attitude toward guns, political climate in Midland/Odessa, Texas

This subject is for the Texas people here or anyone who has lived in Midland/Odessa. I'm thinking about transferring to there from Waco (job promotion, more money), but I'm wondering about the political climate there, attitude toward guns, etc. Anyone have any insight for me? I'd like to take the job, but there's more to life than money. I'll take my CHL and carry in any town I want in Texas, but I'd rather stay here if the attitude's of people there are less than hospitable. Any help is greatly appreciated, I've got about 2 weeks to decide. Also, the names of some good gun stores and places to shoot would be helpful. Thanks.

Very pro-gun in my opinion. I would say better than Lubbock or Amarillo (I've been a Lubbock resident). They ain't too **** shabby either. Between the Walls in Midland is quite a good gunshop. Cost of living would probably be cheaper too. Better weather too.

Agreed. The M-O area should be a near haven for us types.

What about the Hill Country? Are they OK with RKBA?

It's Texas! Very pro gun, as long as you avoid the big urban areas, and even some of those are "free territory".

mjsarge, I would say that it is better than Waco. In Waco you have to contend with an anti gun federal prosecutor, remember Mt Carmel? M/O should be an improvement though with the pre-emption law in Texas there are uniform gun laws across the state.

BillX, exactly where in the hill country did you have in mind? That covers a large area. Inside the Austin city limits are not politically pro-gun, but the laws are the same everywhere in the state. I have had no problems anywhere I have gone.

I lived in Midland 3-1/2 years. Very gun friendly people, lots of folks with CCW. Don't know about LEO, never had any contact while I was there. Political climate is very conservative so I'd say most pols are probably pro-RKBA and pro-selfdefense. I met 2 candidates for Midland mayor while I lived there and both of them were.

Bad points: Only one range, as I recall. I never went there, as I used to go back down to Alpine quite a bit and shoot with my old cronies at BBSC. Worst thing is that you are on a drug/illegal immigrant transportation corridor. You see a lot of folks stopped by DPS and the Border Patrol has a presence there. Like I said earlier, although I drove a lot, I never did get stopped so I don't know about how the LEOs are.

p l i n k e r is right on the money about Between the Walls, good shop and friendly folks.

I don't admit it to my friends, but I'd go back to the "Midessa" in half a heartbeat.
