Ok there were two posts about building custom 1911's over the past few days.

Here is where to get a COMPLETE Colt 1991a1 (series 80) upper (slide, barrel, bushing, sights, firing pin, extractor, fp spring, fp stop) for $195 (i have one of these on my custom DA 1911)

OK... I'm gonna ask the dumb question... how about a source for the lower assembly... the frame et al? Whattaya recommend, Dr Rob??

Caspian has a number of the sets that they had made for Mitchell for sale at the SHOT Show. You might try contacting Caspian. Another inexpensive frame that is available if you are building up a budget 1911 is from Essex in either carbon steel or stainless.
 
I did one of the series 80 colt slides. I pulled all the series 80 stuff out and installed a regular extractor and firing pin. I put it on an old essex frame. Works great.
