I just went over the www.atomicammunition.com site.
I know next to nothing about this line & wanted some TFL input.
The specs(vel/KE for the .45acp 185gr +P seem really high :rolleyes:).
I'm always leery of the smaller firms that have a lot of hype/PR but I'm also curious to see if Atomic will be around for the long haul.

Years ago there was a .357 Atomic cartridge

It featured really hot loaded .357 and was a marketing tool of Great Western Arms if I recall.
Their .38 +P upside down wadcutter looks interesting. Probably lead the barrel like crazy though. Wouldn't be easy to shoot in a lightweight.

Hope they stick around.

The company says gun owners should refer to the owners manual or gun company to make sure its safe.
The prices run about $1.50 to $2.00 per round for a box of 50.
The .45acp 185gr +P has a KE level around 614 which is nearly 100 foot lbs higher than other major brands the same size.

I can just hear the opening remarks of the persecuting attorney in a wrongful death or self defense shooting using Atomic Ammo. It wouldn't be pretty.:rolleyes:

It couldn't be worse than Air Freedom Rounds or DRT. ;)

A valid arguement could be made that you only bought the factory ammunition. You didn't name the brand or the company.

I'd venture to guess that most jurors or board of inquest members wouldn't know of any major handgun rounds or names.
The Winchester "Black Talon" scandal is a good example.
Winchester got a lot of bad PR in the mid 1990s. They changed the brand name to SXT & Ranger then got rid of the black color on the bullets & its all good. :)

If it is a wrongful death, it won't matter what the ammo is called, now will it?

As for self defense, if you think the ammo is better than other options for self defense, why would you not use it? Which are you going to worry about more, dying now or being prosecuted later?

I don't ever want to have to defend myself with my gun. My policy is to use nondescript ammo and guns. The last thing I would want to worry about is the impression on jurors of using "Atomic" ammunition or a pistol named "the Judge" in a self defense situation.

Why take a chance?

I'll do what I can to mitigate both risks.

Dr. Glenn E. Meyer has shown rather convincingly that the appearance of some firearms can influence jurors unfavorably. But we have reason to believe that some of the firearms that cause such a reaction may have some real advantages in home defense.

I's a judgment call.
 
I am not familiar with Atomic. In response to potential legal issues, I take the advice I was given to use what LE uses, so I normally have Gold Dot, HST, or Ranger ammo for carry.

I defy anyone here to produce court documents where the brand of ammo was used by a prosecuting attorney to impune a defendant.
 
I was doing some Wikipedia ammo research and someone had edited in a lot of Atomic Ammo marketing claims alongside factual information. I don't know if that was the company itself, but I found it very offputting.

I'm happy to give them a chance, though. Any reports are appreciated.

Research the Harold Fish event in AZ.
That incident comes up often in gun/tactics forums.
Fish, a retired teacher, used a SAO type 1911a1 Caspian frame 10mm.
The prosecutors put up a "expert" who testified how no sworn US law enforcement agency used a single action 10mm sidearm with 10mm Hydra-Shok rounds. :rolleyes:
A female juror later told a NBC news crew; "I don't know why he(Fish) had to use those hollowpoints or carry a 10mm pistol."
The juror also said: "I don't know a lot about guns."
In a recent court case in my area, the jurors in a homicide case asked to review the murder weapon; a S&W .357magnum Sc J frame revolver. They convicted the defendant.

Author and legal use of force expert, Massad Ayoob(who also chaired legal & LE panels on use of force topics) has put out a few articles about brands/labels too.

Don't know. I don't use it. However, I use what I think is best. I will use what I think is best regardless of naming.

Actually, virtually everything has been shown to affect juries. What isn't known is what the affect will be.

You do have to be alive to be prosecuted nowadays.

Very true.

The guy Fish killed had a long history of allowing his vicious dogs to attack people. Yep, the Harold Fish case was overturned on appeal. Unfortunately, Harold Fish spent three years in prison.

During Fish’s trial, the jury was not allowed to hear evidence that Kuenzli had acted violently in similar situations in the past. In June, an Arizona appellate court overturned Fish’s conviction, acknowledging the jury should have heard this evidence and also saying the jury was not instructed properly on the meaning of “unlawful physical force.”

In the meantime the AZ legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer changed the self defense law. BTW: That law is retroactive.

“There have been two recent, significant developments in the case involving Mr. Fish,” said Rozema. “First, the Court of Appeals reversed the conviction. Second, the legislature passed a bill requiring retroactive application of the new self-defense law.”

Did not want to chamber on my new Glock 19 ran some in my well broke in 17. No problem. This was all the range had at the time. Still have some. Not real pretty nor consistent. Will not buy more.

I first noticed Atomic Ammunition searching the web for Buffalo Bore & Buffalo-Barnes .357 HP's in stock. I couldn't help but notice a 50 round box of Atomic's 158 gr. .357's priced 40 odd cents less than most if not all 20 or 25 round boxes of premium brands. What really caught my eye was their use of Nosler JHP's.So I got 100 rounds. Once in hand, visual inspection indicated excellent quality... no cockeyed bullet seating,(laid a straight - edge across the opened boxes)nice,clean crimps,even primer seating... on testing with 4"S&W586,4"686,2.5"model 19, 2.25" Ruger SP101,4"GP100 and an 18.5" Marlin 1894C I grouped 2-4" @ 25 yrds. with a sandbag rest; no misfires, hang fires, failures to feed or extract,clean burning. I have reloaded their brass twice now with 6.5 gr. Blue Dot & 158 gr. Hornady XTP's.
Looks like now we have one more good brand to choose from.

I have not fired any AA yet. I'm in no rush but I'm glad the company is making high quality products & customers are satisfied.
