ATK gets huge pistol ammunition contract for ICE/Dept of Homeland Security...

I read an article on Tactical-Life.com that the huge corporation; ATK just landed a major ammunition contract for several large federal agencies like ICE, CBP, etc. The sworn agents & LE officers will carry the Federal HST .40 rounds.
It looks like the Winchester Ranger T is no longer the top federal duty round in 9x19/.40S&W/.357sig.
To my limited knowledge no DHS law enforcement agencies use .45acp sidearms. The US Border Patrol's elite BORTAC might carry 1911a1 pistols but I think they also carry P2000 LEMs in .40.

ATK already had that contract, so nothing's changed, really.

Also, I don't know how many DHS/ICE personnel carry weapons, as opposed to the number of armed FBI agents and other personnel that carry and use the Winchester ammo.

Over the years I've seen major contracts awarded to the big names at one time or another, meaning Winchester, Speer, Federal & Remington ... 32 million rounds here, 200 million rounds there, or $200M worth of a multi-year order, etc. Happens all the time ...

I'm a big Winchester fan, but the Federal HST is out performing everyone else in testing. Looks to be a top notch round.

Looks like the ammo has gone to the Low Bidder not the High Performer! I will keep my Ranger T's and Corbon DPX as they have proven performance.

Carry whatever you want, the Ranger and DPX rounds are just fine, but inferring HST's do not is silly. They have been used quite a bit.

ATK; unlimited & indefinite...

The press release/media item states the amount of .40S&W pistol ammunition is "unlimited" & the time limit for the DHS/ATK contract is indefinite.
That sounds like a big $$$ payday for ATK.
I have nothing against the Winchester T series/Ranger T handgun rounds.
The potent 127gr +P+ 9mm JHP has many supporters. Corbon DPX & Speer Gold Dot is widely used too.
I've never shot or used any Federal HST/Hydra-Shok pistol loads but it's not my first pick for a duty round in .40 or 9x19mm.

well it cant be all that big of a contract. they just came out with there earnings report yesterday(03-12-2012) and they warned that profit and earning would be down full year 2012-2013. stock is almost at it's 52 week low. granted i know they make much more than ammunition but with gun sales the way they are. you would think they would get a piece of that.

Like I said earlier, this isn't a new contract for ATK, it's simply a renewal of a contract they already held. It doesn't really change their position within the industry, and I'm not surprised it didn't change their earnings outlook, since the renewal was probably a foregone conclusion as long as they've been satisfying the existing contract so far.

What are they doing with all that ammo? Is this just used for training or are they really shooting at that many people?

sporting and LE ammo is way down on the list of profit makers

I think Eric Holder includes ammunition with every gun purchase.

No, the Free Ammo Incentive is part of his Undocumented Guns to Mexico program. The guy's got a lot going on, so it's easy to get the programs confused.

They could be talking down the stock price so the execs can get stock options priced lower. When it comes back up, they make a killing having done nothing but manipulate the price. Hypothetically, of course. It's just one way CEO's steal equity from the shareholders; I don't know if it applies in this case or not.

Wall St/Fox Business Channel...

I don't know how this topic about ATK & the new Dept of Homeland Security ammunition contract turned into Cox Business Channel or CNBC but I'd want to make a few points;
The US Dept of Homeland Security; www.DHS.gov has 100s of armed/sworn federal employees. The Dept now runs the FLETC(Federal Law Enforcement Training Center). The FLETC, located in US southeast(near the border of FL & GA) was under the US Dept of Treasury for many years.
The US Border Patrol by manpower, is the largest federal LE agency & is documented to have the highest # of lethal force(member of service) incidents.
As posted, the sworn CBP & ICE personnel carry the P2000 LEM .40S&W but some may still use the popular SIG Sauer P229/P226 DAK service pistol.
In the 1990s, the US Border Patrol issued the Beretta 96D .40 but authorized the optional purchase of DA only P229 pistols. Many Special Agents bought P229s & used them in the remote/rugged areas over the 96D sidearms.

I read over a few reviews & specs about the Federal HST rounds. It's impressive but so is the DPX, Critical Duty(Hornady), DoubleTap Ammo & Speer Gold Dot .40S&W designs.

US Border Patrol has about 15,000 agents alone. 72 rnds per quarter, plus training and practice ammo makes for a lot of rounds.

BP has been using Federal for quite a few years now, recently switching from 155 grain to 180 grain.
