ATF recinds notice on braces

Biden will flip the switch and go for broke on a lot more than semi auto "pistols" with braces.

I would remind all the wording used in the "retraction" letter. They didn't say they've decided not to push the matter, or decided not to change anything, they 've "stopped taking comments" while the matter is under "review".

This is bureau speak for "we haven't given up, we're just postponing discussion for a while".

"Objective Factors for Classifying Weapons with “Stabilizing Braces”; Withdrawal
of Guidance"

"As explained in the notice, the proposed guidance was not a regulation. The
notice informed and invited comment from the industry and public on a proposed
guidance prior to issuing a final guidance document."

"The withdrawal of the guidance does not change any law, regulation, or other
legally binding requirement."

And since am guessing at cause. Maybe some over anxious burons wanted to keep their jobs after new President. But then got told that giving any campaign matter to Georgians right before the elections wasn't helping their prospects.

This is one of those that we're reallllly going to have to watch closely. ATF is acting like an autocratic-legislative power unto itself (nothing new there).

It's too early to call it a "victory" in my opinion, but at least it's an uneasy cease fire.

While not one to get excited about "small" things . . .

I don't have a pistol brace. Probably never will.

The problem with banning pistol braces is in where the line is drawn. Every time the anti gun culture manages to take something away, the "line" shifts closer to "no guns."

We've lost bump stocks and while I don't really care about my personal gun use . . . it moves the line.

Biden and Kamala will try, as Obama did, to take away whatever he can . . . and move the line.

I'm not real happy with what I'm reading about the NRA these days, but at least they are trying to hold the line.

Life is good.

I don't agree. The "line" shifts when an administration succeeds in getting new, more restrictive anti-gun laws enacted. That hasn't happened here.

Many of you will probably label me a Fudd, but I think we brought this entire "pistol brace" debacle on ourselves. The laws and the regulations adopted pursuant to those laws haven't changed. Short barrel rifles are NFA firearms. Period. AR-15 pistols are not short barreled rifles because they don't have shoulder stocks.

So then someone came along and devised a thingie that straps to the wrist. The purported purpose was to make it easier to shoot a somewhat ungainly and poorly balanced handgun one-handed. Enter the wrist brace. The BATFE looked at it, and ruled that inasmuch as it was intended to be used to fire the handgun with one hand, it was okay.

And then all the YouTube commandos showed up with their videos showing how well these "pistol wrist braces" work as ad hoc shoulder stocks, and now we're acting surprised that the BATFE watches YouTube.

I posted previously about how it's just not wise to pull a tiger's tail.

I forget the name now (it never got popular) but there was a gadget that came out in either the late 60s or the 70s, that was a "wrist brace", and the ATF had no issue with it at all. In fact, they didn't even have jurisdiction.

It consisted of a wrist strap with a socket on it, and a "stock" that you shouldered and fitted the end into the wrist socket to provide a steady platform. You held the pistol in your hand. The "brace" did NOT attach to the gun at any point.

I point this out simply to show that there are different kinds of "braces" possible and the ATF, in this case, is only looking at one specific type.

And I do agree that the entire mess is a result of mental children doing the internet equivalent of sticking out their tongues and going "neener neener neener" at the ATF via U-Tube videos.

IF you need to blame someone, be sure to put a fair share of the blame on those people, too.
