ATF form 4473

As some of you may know, a week or so ago I purchased a new Taurus Total Titanium 38 special from my local dealer (www.hotshotsga.com) here in Georgia. Well, currently Taurus has this ad going on where you can recieve a free NRA membership if a Taurus gun is purchased.
According to Taurus, the buyer must send in a copy of the store reciept and the background check form called ATF 4473. Well, according to my dealer, iyt is against the law for the dealer to make copies of this form and send it anywhere.
So, I am stuck between a rock and a hardplace as far as my free NRA membership goes. Is it, ort isn't it legal for that ATF form 4473 to be copied and sent to Taurus?

There is no legitimate reason for Taurus to need that form. All you should need is a copy of the sales receipt, as with any other rebate or promotion offer. They may require a form, or a portion thereof, be filled out by the dealer, but there is nothing on the 4473 they need. Like when you by a product(motor oil, soft drink,etc.), and you fill out the little paper from whatever display they have advertising this deal, that is where you put your name, address, etc, etc. The 4473 does contain some info you may not want them to have, such as your S.S. number. I would send it in as usual, but without the 4473 copy, and if they sqwak, ask them why they need that form anyway.
 
I ran into a similar situation a few years ago. The dealer did not want to give me a copy of the form. I called the local BATF office and they told me I was legally entitled to a copy of any federal form that I filled out. I did not follow up in writing, so all I have is a verbal from the BATF office.
 
Your dealer is in error -- it is by no means illegal to make you a copy of a 4473 for any firearm you purchase. I have never had any problem with getting a copy made at the time of a firearms purchase, and in fact have copies of all the 4473s I've ever filled out.

The point is that Taurus should not have the information from that form. It's bad enough that the dealer keeps it. I would pass on sending it to Taurus.
 
I don't get this. I would not want copies of this form 4473 made by anyone. I don't even like the original form continuing to exist at the dealer. To my mind, we are all already 'registered' firearms owners since these forms simply have to be collected by the government when they want to locate us.

What is Taurus doing? Wasn't something similar part of the S&W sellout deal?
