At Home Porting

Isn't porting esentially holes in the top of barrel, if this is correct would it not be theoretically possible to do this on a drill press, at home. Has anyone ever done this or attempted to do this? Any feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

I've done porting commercially. I used an EDM (Elecrical Discharge Machine), on all rifled arms, and most shotguns. I have drilled some shotgun barrels, but obtained uniformly better results even there with the EDM.

The shape of the holes does make a significant difference, round holes aren't particularly efficient for this purpose. Further, any twist or spade drill will leave a burr on the inside of the barrel. A diesinker has the skillset required to remove burrs from the inside of a rifled barrel without damage being incurred, few other individuals will be able to do this.

First, let me say that I have not ported anything, but I was asking the same question a few years back. The answer I recieved was universal. Homebrew porting is the fastest way of ruining a barrel without a cutting torch. These answers came from gunsmiths and those whom I suspect found out for themselves the hard way but didn't want to fess up. Then I shot a S&W Model 66 with a Bubba port job. I do not know how accurate it was before the job, but it would not group outside of 6 inches at 10 yards afterwards. That was a good enough answer for me. I gave up the thought.

Thanx for the replies. I won't plan on doing that for sure. My reason for asking was I am a dispacther for a Sherrifs dept with plans to eventially move to the road. As of now there are no backup weapons allowed but if this were to change I have considered a .32 H&R snub. I want something fairly light so I have been thinking either the Taurus version in titanium or the Smith & Wesson version. Unfortunatly the Titanium version by Taurus has been discontinued. The porting on this model attracted me so I have been thinking if the occasion arose in the future for needing a backup that maybe I would go with the Smith & Wesson and have it ported. Can anyone advise what this might run?

Don't worry about porting with the .32 H&R Mag. I had the Taurus steel .32 and recoil was negligible. Now I have an S&W 432 "Airweight" at 15oz and recoil from this gun is easily controllable.
