Assembling an AR

So I would like to purchase a new AR, but I'm wondering what the best route to go is. The wife is cool with spending $800 at once but I’m thinking about assembling one piece by piece, such as an $800 upper then buying the lower later. I’m looking in to a 5.56 caliber, but as far as manufacture? That’s what I’m here for. Please let me know any info you have.

Hit the "Build it Yourself" forum tab under "AR15" tab on the page listed above.
You should be able to pick up a Sabre, Bushmaster, DPMS or Olympic upper for that price once the frenzy ends....otherwise check your local pawnshops as the economy gets worse.

Suggestion:
Get the lower first . . . legally speaking, that's the gun. If there were to be a ban, that would likely be the first restricted item. Spend 250-400 or so on a really nice complete lower with a decent trigger, like a Rock River Arms. Take the left over 400-500 or so dollars and get a decent barrel and complete bolt carrier group on order, The rest you can put together with very little money. Of course the sky's the limit but you can always upgrade stuff later. My Stainless Bushy barrel came with the handguards, gas pipe and front sight. Except for the upper receiver, there's not much more to it. Good luck.

I put a DPMS together the way I described and it's perfect. Shoots way under and inch at 100yds.

another question.

Are diffrent manufactures combatible with one another? I know the calibers need to be the same, but can I take an upper fom one manf. and combine it with a lower from a diffrent manf.

Some good advice already given here. AR15.com's build it guides really helped me with putting mine together. I've never worked on a gun before, but I purchased the lower locally and ordered a kit from Del-ton this past summer. Once the kit got here, it took me less than an hour to unpack and assemble everything. I did not purchase or have any specialized tools..I just used what I had available.

The rifle turned out great, and is quite accurate, and I have the pride of knowing I put it together myself for less than $800 including tax and shipping. You might also want to check out the M4 forums at http://www.m4carbine.net
