"Assault Weapon" ban to expire in Sept. 2004?

In Kopel's "Guns: Who Should Have Them?" I read that the "Assault Weapon" ban will automatically expire in September 2004, unless it is extended. Does anyone have any knowledge about this? Will magazines holding over 10 rounds be legal for manufacture again? Great news, if true.

Expect you question to be answered well before 2004, BTR. September 2004 will be the middle of the presidential election. Neither of the two parties will want this to be an issue at that point.

If Gore gets elected, even with a Republican congress, it'll be renewed quicker than you can say "Hi-Cap." The Dems will push it, the Repubs will cave, the pres will sign it into law, with NO expiration next time.

True that it has a sundown; untrue, in my opinion, that there's much chance of that making any difference unless something changes drastically in the next four years.

alan, I'm mailing them about defunding the oversight commission.

But does the expiration clause affect the hi-cap ban too?

Unless the support for the RKBA moves beyond the choir - it is going to be renewed.

I don't think all the letters and protests
from the GOA, NRA, JFPO will mean squat
as they are already discounted.

I recall that Melinda (aka "Bubbles") posted a friend's interview with George W. on this very subject. You might be able to find it in the www.glocktalk.com archives.

GW said something like it would be political suicide for him to sign an extension of the AW ban.

I think that right now (and sadly in future it will be worse). . .

The antis could easily make it suicide NOT to have a new A/W ban.

I believe it will be extended to include import bans. They don't let rifles in the country any more that have pistol grips, and they've recently included anything with a magwell that can take a double-stack AK-47 magazine.
