Ashcroft to floor vote Thursday.

He's the best nominee that Bush has made. Not that it gives me a LOT of peace of mind, as I disagree with him on several topics. But I suspect he's about as good as we have any real chance of getting.

I wonder if Bush will put up Larry Klayman if Ashcroft gets defeated.....

The latest prediction is that Ashcroft will get 60 to 70 votes. He only needs 51 assuming all 100 senators are voting.

Ashcroft has been a sure thing for a while - the delays and the grandstanding are just to score points with the liberal special-interest groups doling out the money for this effort. I wouldn't be surprised to know that all the Dems on the Judiciary committee got together to decide how close the vote would be and who the "defector" would be.

It's a smart play for the Senators bashing Ashcroft. they get political IOUs from the lobbies for going after him in hearings (even though that has zero consequence on what actually happens) at the same time, they can be laughing it up with Ashcroft behind closed doors and getting IOUs from the President for clearing the way for Ashcroft's nomination (even though they encouraged the little ruffians to block the way to begin with).

Ashcroft knows the game pretty well since he was a Senator himself. You let your former colleagues get their face time in by knocking you around some and being quiet about it while the real deal has already been done.

Glad to see he made it through.

I got spooked by that Chavez email posted elsewhere. I try not to get sucked in to the conservative calls of alarm when it's used mainly to generate additional funds.

I understood that the delay was an attempt to find a Smoking Gun or to rally the faithful to flood the mails and faxes against Ashcroft. I made a point to mention that to the senators I called, but the staffs on either side can recognize an orchestrated event. For the ones who were going to vote against him, it just gave them the out to talk about the "flood of emails and faxes" when they knew it was phoney.
