DeKalb Officer Driving On Expired Tag

DECATUR, Ga. -- Channel 2 Action News has uncovered a DeKalb County police officer who hasn't paid for his car tag in seven years.

We found patrolman Eric Ford driving on a tag that expired in November 2000.

He's had his tag run 127 times by various police agencies including 89 times by his own DeKalb Police Department.

But he's only been given one ticket and thought he'd gotten out of it.

DeKalb County's police chief says there are no excuses.

“This officer for whatever reason seemed to have a deadbeat spirit and at the end of the day the public and rest assure that we are going to deal with him," said Chief Terrell Bolton.

As a result of our investigation DeKalb Police are now running checks on all employee cars; six officers have been caught so far.

I feel that my local PD have been given preferential treatment by their own. 7 years is way to long to simply explain away as "professional courtesy". I'm outraged... what is the most effective way to voice my discontent? Why are they only going to deal with him and not the 89 times a fellow officer let him off for having a tag 1-7 years expired?

Can I expect this leniency if I let my tag lapse for 7 years and run across 120+ cops who run my tag? Who can I yell at!! How is this even fair :(

It's a fact that police are given "the benefit of the duobt", even if there is no doubt. I have a friend that is an LEO, and he brags about how fast he drives. He knows that if he gets pulled over, he's going to be let go.

In school, I knew a kid who's father was an LEO. He was pulled over many times for speeding, and never got a ticket.

IMO, LEO's should be held to a higher standard, not a lower one, because they are the ones that enforce the law, and are the most familiar with it. The Governor from NJ. 90mph, and no seat belt. Why? Becasue he knew he could. A local state supreme court judge was pulled over for DUI. She left the scene, and was only charged with a DUI after she said sorry! If I do that, I spned a few weeks in jail. She also kept her job!

People wonder why I don't trust public officials?

I found out that a local, small agency, has implemented a new procedure about this. Officers are required to show a disposition on all car stops where any other officer is stopped. Local officers' plates are listed in their own computer so that stops are recorded. If a specific officer is stopped frequently, the chief is notified and reviews the stops with the offending officer. If he continues to have a high rate of "catch & release" stops, the chief can remove him from patrol duties. If it continues, the officer can be let go for his inability to drive legally.

When officers from neighboring cities are stopped, the CLEO notifies the agency of the circumstances.

I'm told by a friendly LEO that this comes from a case where a CA officer repeatedly used "professional courtesy" to get out of DUI stops until one night when he wasn't stopped before he clobbered another car. Several agencies supposedly lost in the resulting lawsuit so many CLEOs are now trying to CYA and get bad drivers out of patrol cars.
