It's not even a real gun, what a waste of effort and money.

600 Yuan (7 Yuan = $1.00) is what he was paid.

What will the punishment be for something like this? Will it be worth the money? What were they going to do with them?

If it is not a real gun, he will likely pay a fine and the items will be consficated. Also dependent on quantity, he may be charged with smuggling. I am not a customs officer so I can't give a very clear answer. The law is China is very vague and gun control is strict.

My airsoft gun has also been consficated by customs, they did not charge me any fine, but I can't have it back. It is a Russian made MP654K air gun.

I translate the article, the original article is in Chinese, please appreciate my effort.
Also Chinese website will not come and sue an American website. Do not be afraid

There is no copy right, trademark or patent protection as between China and the US. Unless a Chinese work is copyright protected in the US, no need to worry.

I seem to recall a few stories last year about people converting airguns into functional firearms in China.

That sounds a lot like legal advice.

On a more practical note, translations do not seem to be directly addressed by the rules. The OP might be viewed by the mods as a summary, which the rules permit. If it is deemed to be a quote, it appears to meet the single paragraph requirement. So probably not a violation.
