Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoes another bill

To the Members of the California State Senate:

I am returning Senate Bill 89 without my signature.

I love ferrets. I costarred with a ferret in Kindergarten Cop. However, this bill is far too bureaucratic and it legalizes ferrets prior to conducting an environmental impact report (EIR).

I am concerned that there has not been proper study to determine whether ferrets are detrimental to the health and safety of California citizens and the environment.

The EIR should be completed and evaluated as part of the decision making process before changing the legal status of ferret possession.

For these reasons I am returning this measure without my signature.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

This is not related to guns, sure, but it is to personal freedoms, so here.

So, ferrets have been illegal in Cali. until now?

Why? And given why should their status change if the first law had a reason?

Thank god for ferret laws. Becasue, we dont want all those reckless ferret gangs running around, messing with our childrens minds.

So, it sounds like there is a fear (grounded or not) that ferrets in Cali. might turn out like rabits in Australia. Arnold wants a study of the impact they would have, first. The article I read on that link doesn't include a definitive study, but more the reasurances of the pro-ferret people that it is not an issue.

Unless Arnold is a ferret fan, why should he assume there will be no impact?

Here's the heading for this forum:
Round table discussions range from the Bill of Rights, to concealed carry, to general political issues.

This is a discussion of personal freedoms vs. the need to regulate, and what the standard for regulation needs to be. I had thought that seemed about right for this forum. Is it too specific a political issue? Or is there some other problem?

Handy -

As long as the thread stays civil, we'll keep it open. Be careful, though. Along with abortion, religion and JBT, ferret legalization is a touchy subject... ;)

Seriously, though - If the discussion centers around civil liberties vs. public good, we'll keep it open. If we just make a bunch of ferret jokes, it will be closed for being pointless.

Schwarzenegger is letting his personal problems seep into his administration here. It's well known that he was very angry that the ferret upstaged him and came off as more likeable. Some even say he used his clout to get some of the ferret's scenes cut after test audiences said the ferret showed more emotion.

Either way, that ferret never worked again. You be the judge.
