AP: Schwarzenegger Praises Border Volunteers 1 hour, 28 minutes ago

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who outraged some Mexican-American groups last week by calling for a closed border, praised the civilian volunteer Minuteman Project for its patrols to spot illegal immigrants.

"Look, they've cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants by a huge percentage," Schwarzenegger told KFI-AM's "The John & Ken Show" on Thursday.

The Republican governor accused the federal government of failing to control the border and said it encouraged illicit crossers by giving them access to water.

"The whole system is set up to really invite people to come in here illegally, and that has to stop," he said.

The Minuteman Project involves hundreds of volunteers, some armed, who have been patrolling the Mexico-Arizona border since April 1 to document and report illegal crossings.

Chris Simcox, a Minuteman organizer, welcomed Schwarzenegger's support. "It's gratifying to see that elected officials are responding to the will of the people," he said.

There are plans to expand the patrols to California in June, a move Schwarzenegger "does not oppose," said Margita Thompson, his press secretary.

President Bush has denounced the volunteers as vigilantes.

Nativo V. Lopez, president of the Mexican-American Political Association, called Schwarzenegger's comments Thursday "nothing short of base racism."

"Those of immigrant stock should have no illusions about what his real sentiments and feelings are toward them," he said.

Schwarzenegger's press secretary called the issue a matter of national security.

"It's not racist to ask the federal government to enforce its laws," Thompson said.

Schwarzenegger's comments came a week after he faced criticism for telling a gathering of newspaper publishers that the United States needed to "close the borders." He apologized the next day, blaming faulty English and saying he really meant the borders should be secured.

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that about 11 million illegal immigrants live in the United States, half of whom come from Mexico. California is home to 2.4 million, far more than any other state.

Schwarzenegger is no racist and it is a good thing he has put his oar in with suppressing the illegals. I am a little leery of the motivations of many in the Minuteman Project, especially with the nutty stuff Ted Nugent says and the positive response it gets from some here, but the goal of the project is a good one.

I swear Arnold has got to be bi-polar. First, he makes an idiotic move and signs the .50 ban (a bad thing) and then turns around and publicly supports the MM Project (a good thing).

The governator is fast losing his foundation of conservatives and less than convicted liberals. The approval ratings are down and falling further. Plls say that the genuine citizens who are working, are concerned with supporting illegals with their tax dollars. The governator is pandering to the polls in order to boost his approval rating.

Arnold signed the .50 Ban because the Demoncrats had enough votes to override a veto and they promised to hash all of his reforms if he vetoed it. So goes the version I get from a Sacramento friend who would know.

He's not conservative enough for some folks, yet too conservative for others. Especially here in Cali-FORNya (his pronunciation). The Dems have managed to get California into one stinkin' heap of a mess financially and continue to say that taxes are the only way to pay for it. "Accountability" never enters the vacuum space between their ears.

The nutjobs who masquerade as legislators (with a few exceptions) are in office to live off the money they squeeze out of the taxpayers. I did send Arnold a message, only slightly tongue-in-cheek, that said "You need to change the constitution -- so we can only pay the salaries of Senate and Assembly members out of the budget surplus".

Bill, that's brilliant. Think we can make that law nation-wide? Oh wait, the people who would have to make it a law are the ones that would be screwed. Great idea, though.

give me a freaking break! not wanting a bunch of illegal immigrants flooding the country has NOTHING to do with race.

Best idea I've heard in decades, esp. if done at the federal level. Good to see Arnold backs the rule of law vis a vis illegal aliens & the MM project.

Yes, because we all know that Arnold is really from Iowa and has a problem with people who legally immigrate to the United States. Some people should think before they engage their mouths.

IZ, I and a number of other TFL members are from Iowa. What the hell are you talking about? Are you saying that Iowans are racists? Or just that we are simple-minded hicks? Either way, YOU are the one who needs to think before opening his mouth.
It's possible that I'm misunderstanding you here, and really, I hope that I am (being a hayseed dirt farmer from Iowa, I ain't too bright and all), but it sounds like you have a prejudiced mindset yourself. Iowa is a very educated state....if you have a personal problem with Governor Arnold; if you think he's a prejudiced bastard, how does making a ridiculously rude and biased blanket statement about an entire state help make your point or differentiate you from other closed-minded people?
Waiting for either an apology or an admittance of bigotry and ignorance.............

'member when Ahnuld said "seal the borders" then quickly his aide said "he really meant . . . ."? At that point two stories were planted side by side in the same media outlets. Ahnuld's people went to work polling to find out which position attracted the most favorable support.

With this story Ahnuld just disclosed which side won. I look forward to an increasing frequency of pronouncements from Ahnuld about the effects of criminal immigration on CA society. Bush // Rove will be watching and consulting from the weeds.

Curiously enough, yesterday I read a story (don't remember where) that Bush is very, very quietly supporting the completion of the wall down in San Diego.

Something has changed since the militia rode to the border.

tjhands,

I think you need to work on your sarcasm filter just a bit. I can’t speak for IZinterrogator, but the way I believe he meant his comment to be taken was that Schwarzenegger is obviously an immigrant himself, so clearly he isn’t anti-immigration but rather anti-illegal immigration. I suspect that IZinterrogator’s reference to Iowa was a reference to heartland America. IOW, Schwarzenegger isn’t from heartland American, is an immigrant himself and is in fact “of immigrant stock”, therefore Nativo Lopez’s comment that Schwarzenegger is racist is pretty unfounded.

Waitone,

If you will recall, I have been saying for sometime now, well before the minuteman project, that Bush has been quietly making changes in order to deal with this problem. Some people were too caught up in their bash Bush fest that they were unable to see the positive things he had already done, nor the things he is currently implementing…

Believe you me, there are more than a few things that Bush has done that have radically changed the face of illegal immigration. It just takes time for these things to become obvious.

ahenry,

Thanks for (hopefully) setting me straight on that. Like I said in the post, I hoped that I misunderstood IZ's post, and seriously, I apologize profusely if I misinterpretted his meaning. His post was a little vague and obviously sarcastic, but in hindsight, after hearing your explanation, I can see that I most likely took it as an anti-Iowa sarcasm, instead of how it was intended.

IZ, can I retroactively change my post to read: "right on! I totally agree with you!" ?? :o
Seriously, I'm sorry for jumping the gun on that one.....Iowa takes a lot of undeserved ribbing in this country. Looks like with MY help, it'll change from being a bunch of "hicks" to a bunch of "ultra-sensitive cry babies."

All apologies, IZ.

Tim

Your position lets you see things I can't or don't. All I see is what is available in the media and more importantly how public officials react to what I see in the media. When I see reactions that are out of character with reports, I must conclude something has changed.

No doubt Bush has stuff going on out of the spot light. That is his style. However, the evidence of changes appear in public coincidently with high profile pushback against Bush's public positions on criminal immigration. Maybe its time for ongoing initiatives to go public OR maybe he is reacting to some telling publicity. Can't tell.

This little exchanges demonstrates the difference between leadership and management. The criminal immigration fiasco demands leadership from the president. We get management.

Nativo Lopez huh ??? Anyone that even listens to him is being misled . He was kicked off the school board by his own people . He changed his name so as to seem more MEZIKAN . Check this guy out a little and see who and what you are dealing with .

Everything I have said is public information readily available to anybody willing to take a bit of time to research the issue. Granted, I sometimes draw conclusions from readily available information that other might not make. For instance, I drew the conclusion that when Bush’s most recent budget included monies for only 200 new BP agents but substantially increased the agencies funds for technology, it was because the facilities weren’t available yet to train much more than about that many BP agents in that time frame. I’ll admit that unless you followed things very closely, you might not realize that the BP training facilities are deficient right now. But for the most part, the overwhelming majority of the things I have talked about are more than “available in the media” and have been going on now since Bush’s first term.

Arnold is a two faced lier.

Who could believe any thing consertive out of the mouth of a jerk married to a kennedy.
Thank GOD he diddnt decide to live in Indiana, at least our governor dosent wear more makeup than M Jackson.
