ARMS #18 mount. HELP!!!!

I'm working on getting the stripper clip guide off of my M1A so I can mount my new ARMS #18 scope mount.

I've already driven out the roll pin with a punch. I hade to drive it out from the inside because it would absolutely not move the other direction. It must have been poor machining on the role pin hole or a tapered roll pin (it does look like half of it is thicker), because the ARMS instructions show that it should be driven from the outside in.

Now I'm supposed use a brass to tap the stripper clip guide out of the dove tail joint. I'm trying, but it just won't move. What I really need is an anvil that has a surface the could match exactly with the dove tail joint.....

Any ideas?? I'm sure someone has done this before. That thing is just STUCK on there!

Use some penetrating oil and smack the bejezzus out of it. That's how my friend got his off for his Smith Enterprise mount. Don't be suprised if the mount is just as hard to get in as the stripper guide is to get out. Good luck.

The ARMS instructions said to use a small hammer and not break the receiver. HA!

Here goes nothin'!

Is WD40 a good penetrating oil???

I wonder if a real forged M14 receiver was this difficult.

WD-40 should work great. Try a wooden dowel for the tapping aprt and a bigger hammer...The wood wont marr the surface.

OK. I got it out. Thanks for all you help! I can always count the forum for good advice.

I didn't have WD40, so I used CLP. I don't know how well CLP penetrates, but it seemed to work. I got to go to the store and get some WD40. Who doesn't have WD40 on hand? Sheesh!

I used my brass tap and a 16 oz hammer. I really smacked the bejezus out of it and it finally gave way.

When the ARMS instructions said small hammer, they must have been talking about using a 1 lb hammer instead of a 5 lb sledge hammer. Holy Cow!

I'll keep posting if I have more problems; that way people can search the forums when they need help.

After Thought:

The military manual that came with the M1A had a section about how to destroy the M14 rifle in the field as a last resort so that the enemy can't use it if captured. HA! Are they kidding? This thing is indestructible!

Part of the reason it was so hard to get out was that pounding on the roll pin caused a little bit of the roll pin hole to "ream" out into the stripper clip guide and really lock them together.

Would it be a good idea to file it smooth before putting the ARMS dovetail piece into the joint?

That's it. It's on there. I didn't put lock-tight on the threads like the instructions said. Should I run to the store and get some? Will the mount "shoot loose" without it?

:D
