Arming Teachers in Louisiana

Three cousins of mine in Louisiana were telling me today that someone is trying to pass mandatory legislation that arms all public school teachers with handguns either on their person or in a safe while classes are in session.

Anyone know anything more about this?

Not sure. I just did some internet searches and all I could come up with was Rep. Frank Lasee proposing this in Wisconsin.

As much as I wish everyone (with the exception of violent criminals..who should be locked away from society) should be armed..I would have to oppose and laws making it mandatory. Nobody who doesn't want to carry or possess a firearms should be forced to. But it should definitely be an OPTION. It works successfully in Israel from what I have read.

That's exactly what I said. They weren't comfortable with it at all. In fact, they didn't like the idea of guns in school at all. Didn't think it would do any good anyway full auto weapons vs. handguns, older kids who could get guns away from women teachers if the knew they carried, liability issues, accidental discharges, not trusting other teachers with guns, etc.

I agree, it should be available for those who are comfortable with it.

Care to post a link on what you have read about Israel? Might just change their minds if I could send them the link.

Allowing teachers to arm themselves

What the Rep. in Wisconsin is proposing is simply allowing teachers to arm themselves. That is a big difference from arming teachers. The same mistake is commonly made with airline pilots. The government never proposed arming them. Rather, they allowed them to arm themselves. Nobody will know who chooses to do this. It is the only possible way to stop a Columbine type disaster.

The reasonable proposition is that if a teacher has a CCW or CHL, they cannot be forbiddent to carry at school.

Clean, easy - gets rid of lots of regulation, etc.

Now - let's have all the folks denounce teachers or demand they go to ninja school - like they are such warriors.

I'm home schooling my kids and living in a hut, wait here come the UN heliocopters. :D

Arming the teachers sounds like good policy to me. I`m sure there are plenty of them that would make that decision. This would be a better policy than what the schools that my kids go to now have. If a gunman or terrorist invades the schools here, the teachers want the kids to rush to closets or bathrooms that can be locked. That is stupid policy. That just makes them an easier target. All the bad guy has to do is break the door lock and now he has a bunch of kids all in on spot to kill.
I told my kids if there is ever a shooting in school, ignore the teacher and run like hell. Get out of the school if you can and get away from the school property. And if the teacher says my kids will be in trouble for doing that, well I`ll sue the school, the teacher, and principal. I want to teach my kids some self defense tactics if it ever happens where they cannot escape from a room if the bad guy already gets in before they can run.

I believe that this will ultimately make the schools a safer place. These types of volunteer programs are in place in Israel. The number of school shootings plummeted after the program was in place. Forcing teachers to carry guns is not the way to go about it, assuming that's what is going on in this particular piece of legislation. If a teacher volunterily decides to go armed, then they should be trained in the safe handling of firearms, and legal use of force. Two out of the past nine school shootings were stopped premaurely by school officials that ran out to their cars and retrieved handguns.

I'd carry

I'm a schoolteacher. I can't say how I might react if faced with the unthinkable scenario of needing to shoot another person because they threaten the lives of inocents. That being said, I'd be willing to carry at school for the sake of my students' safety, as well as my own. There are a few - maybe very few - of us (teachers) who have had this in the backs of our minds for years. This is the first I've heard of such a thing in other countries. Glad to see it is working for them. I pray that it will work for us.
