"Armed society is a polite society"

That does not mean that everyone is too afraid to speak up lest someone take offense and gun him down. What that does mean is that an armed person is secure in body and mind and, therefore, does not need to assert himself by being rude to others.

A man carrying a side-arm is, in many ways, protected against others' reaction to his rudeness. That obliges him to take the high road and be even more polite than he would have been when unarmed.

The Internet provides a similar level of safety from the audience's reaction. One can insult another forum member and get away with it, physically. That means that the obligation to restrain ourselves cannot be enforced by anyone else but us.

The number of personal attacks and rude outbursts has been very high this week. While we are a miniature society with almost 5,000 members, I keep the faith that we will improve on the society at large. Courtesy to others' views would go long way to make TFL a better forum. Please check the safeties on your tempers, folks.

Thank you.

Oleg:

I've read some of the threads you are probably referencing, and I agree.

An interesting side note, however. With so many publicized shooting incidents in recent months, and a seeming escalation of the gun control "debate", I have a sense of frustration, in that I feel acquaintances/co-workers/relations who know my views looking at me as a freak who doesn't understand the "obvious" need to curtail access to firearms.

I'm afraid I'm developing a strident, paranoid tone in defending something that makes sense on both visceral and rational levels.

TFL is a place of refuge for me, where I can interact in a safe, non-judgmental environment with kindred spirits. I just trust that finer feelings and cooler heads will prevail.

Speaking of armed societies, does anyone know what happened to AK-47.Net? I haven't been able to reach their site tonight.

And, does anyone know anything about this rifle I bought tonight? It is a Russian SKS, model 1954r, folding bayonette, fixed 10 round mag.

Anyone know what it's worth is? Or if there is a detachable mag conversion for it?

Critter,

If you'll post that question in Harley Noldens section, you'll get all the info there is to know on your weapon.

The only thing I know about that weapon is that my good buddy Critter got it for a song!

My dad is of the opinion that the best way to deal with road rage is to just arm everyone. Think of how polite you would be while driving if in the back of your mind you thought about the other guy slinging lead your way.
