WooHoo! Just got our Virginia CCWS in the mail this Thursday! Took one day under three weeks. It feels good to be carrying again.
Kinda sucks that they don't allow carrying in resturants, but thats the law for now.
Good shooting everybody!

Being able to carry, is one of the most liberating feelings- you know that if it comes down to life or death, you can live
and the law can come later and thats O.K.

I would much rather be "Judged By Twelve" than "Carried By Six"...

I really feel as a family man, that it is my duty, no... my OBLIGATION to be able to provide atleast a modicum of safety and security for my family, especially my 8 month old little girl who would be the truly "innocent" victim.
Not MY Family, NOT ON MY WATCH !
I REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM !

I also know that as I am a Police Reserve Officer, ( I carry off duty with a permit as just a private citizen, as per Dept.Policy ) that the police are under no obligation to protect individual people, but to enforce the law, and to arrest and prosecute criminals. And that`s usually AFTER THE FACT...
You cannot sue the city, county, or state for "lack of protection" if your victimized while waiting for the Police to "PROTECT AND SERVE" you...
They have NO culpability for not being able to respond before harm can come to you and your loved ones... Scary fact, but sadly true.
If one thinks that the police are going to be able to be there and personally protect them from criminals at any given moment, they`re wrong, hopefully not DEAD wrong...
Just look at L.A. during their "Riot / Civil Unrest " the police REFUSED to go into the danger zone, and left "THE PEOPLE" that they were sworn to "PROTECT AND SERVE", to have to protect themselves and their property and store fronts by themselves...
If not for the ability to ARM and protect themselves and their property , many more lives would have been lost...

They would have been like lambs led to the slaughter...

Anyways, my whole point is that we as a society are responsible for our own immediate personal safety whether we like it or not, and how can we do that without the means in which to defend ourselves??
Concealed Carry is not JUST a GOOD IDEA, It`s the only way.

Just Food For Thought...

.45 is right! Federal and state courts have consistently held that there is no Constitutional right to be protected by the government from criminals even when lives are in immediate peril.* This is not a new concept. As early as 1856 the U.S. Supreme Court declared that local law enforcement had no duty to protect a particular person, but only a general duty to enforce the laws. [South v. Maryland, 59 U.S. (How.) 396, 15 L.Ed., 433 (1856)]. That police agencies exist to protect citizens from criminals is a myth perpetuated by effective public relations campaigns as well as an uninformed citizenry. Ultimately, we, as individuals, are responsible for our own protection. Unfortunately, there are still units of government such as those in my state, Michigan, that refuse to recognize our right to protect ourselves with a concealed weapon.

*[Bowers v. DeVito, U.S. Court of Appeals, 7th Circuit, 686F.2d 616 (1982); . [Warren v. District of Columbia, D.C.App., 444 A.2d 1 (1981)]; Morgan v. District of Columbia, 468 A2d 1306 (D.C.App. 1983)]; [Riss v. City of N.Y., 293 N.Y. 2d 897 (1968)]; [Marshall v. Winstonm, 389 S.E.2nd 902 (Va. 1990)]; [Hartzer v. City of San Jose, App., 120 Cal.Rptr 5 (1975)] to cite a few.

you know that if it comes down to life or death, your gonna live

Correction. You know that if it comes down to it, you have the "opportunity" to live. There are no guarantees in life. Not a flame, but too many people who carry have a mis-guided sense of immortality.

Daddycat, if Virginia outlaws self defense in a restaurant, then if I were a bandit, restaurants would be the first place I'd hit. Plenty of cash there and no one allowed to defend him/herself.

If you're carrying concealed, who would know you were carrying in a restaurant, anyway??

I carry everywhere, just as the Second Article states my Right. FWIW. J.B.

Ok... i'm going to say some words, and i want you to write down the first thing that comes to your mind when i say it.

McDonalds
The Post Office
Ruby's Cafe
Columbine High
Reginald Denny

Ok... i think i've said enough for now.

Daddycat,

If you are going to "accidently" carry into a resturant I would suggest waiting a few weeks. If you are anything like I was you will be checking your holster every minute or so when you first start to carry. Once you trust your holster not to dump it off your hip and you can keep your hands off then maybe. Until then you will be acting strangely to anyone who knows what to look for.

FWIW, daddycat isn't new to concealed carry, just to Virginia. He did live in Georgia, where he had a license and, I assume, carried concealed. He and his wife recently moved to Virginia and applied for their CCW for that state. Just a note for the ones who thought he was new to carrying concealed.

How's Virginia, Daddycat? Also, how's the Springfield .45? :)

Hi Rsix! Good to hear from you. I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to hook up again before I left. Virginia is pretty good. We like it here. Concealed carry is trickier here due to Maryland not being a shall issue state and having car carry friendly laws. As for D.C. well, they don't allow weapons for the most part at all. The Springfield is doing fine. Finally got the barrel from Wilsons as they promised. I wound up paying for the night sights and they ate the cost of the barrel, which cost me less in the long run.
The pistol now has the kind of accuracy That I wanted. There were some petty things that happen through all this that left a bad taste in my mouth, but at least the pistol shoots well. They replaced the full length guide rod with a two piece guide rod w/o telling me that they were going to do so and its a pain in the a## to deal with. I'll probabley have a local smith change it back to a one piece sometime in the future.
E-mail me if you ever think you'll be in N.VA. Me and the missus will be glad to put you up.
Good shooting!

Welcome to the Commonwealth of Virginia!!

The restraunt bit has too do with those places that serve Alchohol. In virginia every bar must also be a "Restrant" so people will hopefuly eat and not drink on an empty stomach. Of course, many a regular restraunt will serve beer, this is where this law gets mighty burdomsome!!

As I live in Virginny I too would like to change this. Any body with Ideas on how to do this and make the Repulicans Prove their Por-gun stance by repealing some other dumb gun laws here just E-mail me!

IZZY

Welcome to the Commonwealth, Daddycat. As Izzy has pointed out, the carry restriction applies to places that werve alcohol. VA didn't even have liquor by teh drink until `71, and all 'bars' must derive sver 50% of their revenue from food, so there really is no such thing as a bar in VA.

However, open carry is legal in VA, so if you go in a resturant, take off your cover so that your gun is 'openly visable' and enjoy your meal (I would abstain from alcohol, as drinking when armed is a no-no regardless), cover up as you leave. Also, check local ordinances before you do this, as there may be retrictions on open carry in the town you are dining in that could get you cited as a 'public nusiance' (Alexandria and some parts of Fairfax are kinda tight@$$ed). Once you're any distance from DC (a third world country posing as a Federal city) and the People's Republik of Fairfax, though, this litlle 'dodge' works fine.
Best regards, M2

It is long been a principal of ours that one is no more armed because he has possession of a firearm than he is a musician because he owns a piano. There is no point in having a gun if you are not capable of using it skillfully. - Jeff Cooper

Welcome to VA Daddycat. To keep up with "the times", you might find the info on the web site of Virginia Citizens Defense League, Inc. (VCDL) useful - catch it at http://www.vcdl.org/.

When you get tired of the bustle up north, drop down to Virginia Beach for a breather.

Just a couple more months and you will have it right...

Armed and Potentially Dangerous...

Yer not dangerous till you make it so...

Texas has a better CCW law regarding alcohol. A business the derives 51% or more from the sale of alcohol, must have a sign with a big red 51. You cannot carry there.
