Armchair quarterbacking the NRA

Some off topic posts on another thread raised this issue. What do we think of the NRA's recent attacks on Clinton's gun control agenda. Were the NRA tactics well thought out? What could they have done better, and what should they be doing now? Personally, I am glad to see the NRA going on the offensive, although I'm not sure the "blood on his hands" bit is going to bring many fence sitters to our side. Since gun control is going to be a big issue in this presidential election what can we be doing to attract supporters to our side?

Sadly The American people as a hole are dumb enough that they can't tell a spun lie from the truth. I have come to the conclusion that they deserve what they get. The soccer moms and the would be wanabes will flutter their eyes and pant at any thing that slob will say and ask for seconds. I think when we turned the information distribution over to a left wing press they gave up the last bit of hope. While there are several million gun owners none seem to have the nerve to stand up and challenge the lies On the NRA present stand which was true to the last word the media spun it and 75 percent of the public thought they were too tough on him. That includes the politicians. I am looking for something other than an outright terrorist attack on the media which will change their direction and turn them to the truth disseminators they were meant to be

Well, I have mixed feelings on this, but basically am in favor of it, with the following caveats.

I am glad the NRA is starting to sound more like GOA, although I suspect LaPierre is taking a hard line due to the NRA elections and is trying to stave off election of the Neal Knox supporters.

The downside is that this fits right in to Willie's plan to politicize this issue even more during an election year. Combine that with the leftwing media and it is an uphill battle. We can only hope that Willie will come out with something so Draconian, it send more people our way.

I'm tired of placating the fence-sitters. If
they can't/won't see what's happening to this country, then it's time to start smacking them between the eyes with verbal 2x4s and let the chips fall where they may.
After 30 years, nice-nice time is over as far as I'm concerned.

I think the best thing for us is to get a full and complete airing of the issue. We've taken a position of, "Shhhh, let it go away", and it, in fact, will never go away while tragic events involving firearms continue. They will, IMHO, always continue, and that's just part, a sad part, of life. If firearms were obiterated from the planet, those same events would happen using other types of weapons.

The NRA is a major political institution, and it knows that membership roles increase under fire, so it benefits from these types of events and resulting confrontations, as does a politician like Clinton. They are two sides to the same coin. (I just sent them another contribution, BTW.)

Fire and brimstone bring out supporters from both sides, and as long as the issue is discussed in full, we have nothing to fear, for most Americans believe in responsible private handgun ownership.

They also believe in the spirit of compromise, and I think that's the part that gives us the most fear: the slippery slope.
