Armand Swenson

I would like to know if Mister 45 is still alive.I have only read one article about him(May/June 96 American Handgunner)
I have often wonder if Armand Swenson was the gun shop owner "Swede" in the John Wayne movie "El Dorado"?
I figured The Firing Line would be the best place to find the answers to my questions.

No, I believe Armand Swenson died quite a while ago. I have only seen one example of his work, and it was waaaaay ahead of its time. One of his 'trademarks' was a vertical pin through the top of the slide just over the barrel's locking lugs, to achieve identical lock-ups with each shot. That's *still* a great idea..
I haven't got a clue if that was Swenson in the movie, though..

Your quesion triggered my curiosity and sent me through about 30 minutes of net travel I would not otherwise spend time on.

I finally located us.imdb.com which lists Olaf Wieghorst as Swede Larson in El Dorado.

There was an article in one of the gun rags by Joe Rychetnik (sp?) about Swenson's demise. My take on it was that he died sometime within the last 2-3 years. Never saw any of his work but I understand it was good.

Not a bad epitaph for a working man.

Wieghorst is (or was, he may be dead also) a noted Western artist. The paintings shown during the opening credits of El Dorado are his work.

This is why I love this place!!! There is more information available about so many subjects than any place I could imagine.

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

Ed
