Hello all, I have the chance to buy an Armalite 180. The receiver was stamped Sterling and I believe it's a preban model because of the folding stock, flash suppressor and bayonet lug. The barrel is stamped .223 Rem, has a wierd looking symobl on it like an HK prrofmark and 17.5mm? They want $700 for it.
Any opinions on this rifle? Is that a good price?

There are no post-ban 180's anyway. All are pre-ban. Anyway........the Sterling is the least desireable of the 180s because they cast a number of small parts for economy, making those parts "relatively" weak and breakable. A Sterling in 90% is worth $950.00. It goes down from there depending on condition. The CostaMesa and the Howa are more expensive. I have a Sterling and a CostaMesa. Both are excellent shooters, but the Sterling extractor broke twice, so I machined one. No trouble since. I originally paid $389 for the Sterling brand new. I paid $379 for the Costa Mesa brand new............lots of years ago.

PJ: Depending on it's condition, this could be a good buy. As to badly cast parts on Sterlings, I haven't heard that. My understanding was that Sterlings were less desireable because of the sloppy looking welds on the reciever. Armalite makes some spare parts for the 180 and is planning on having more available--check out their website, and if you haven't already check out: http://www.sterlingwebpages/ar180site/ar180home.com for excellent information concerning history. You may also be able to ascertain if this price is right or not. Good luck!
