Armalite M15A2 Questions....

Can someone tell me what price the standard Armalite M15A2 is going for
retail? I've been quoted a price of $899. Does this seem about average?
There are not a lot of dealers that carry them in my area. In fact, the
dealer I got the quote from wouldn't have any available for 5 to 6 weeks and
there is a waiting list! Anyway, I have wanted an AR for some time and I
finally settled on the Armalite, unless of course someone would care to try
and change my mind.....

I've been told the stock triggers are not too good. Adding a National Match trigger would increase the cost to $999 and I can get the NM M15A2 for $1199 with the stainless barrel and free floated barrel including the NM trigger. I'm looking for suggestions from some experienced AR shooters out there! The standard A2 is has a 1 in 9" twist while the NM has a 1 in 8" twist.
Also, how much does the chrome lined barrel really decrease accuracy? The rifle will be used primarily for informal target shooting.

As you can tell, I'm new to the AR and would appreciate some feedback!

Thanks,
Slim

$899 is probably on the high end of the average scale for an Armalite M15. I've seen 'em higher, and I've seen 'em lower. I, however, wouldn't wait for 5 or 6 months for one. I'd either A) Find one abroad and have it transferred to your dealer or B) Go with a Bushmaster, DPMS, or Olympic Arms AR. I've had both Bushies and Olys and have no complaints about them - Plus, they're alot less expensive than the ArmaLite.

Hey slim

Are you looking for a pre ban or a post ban?

I fyou get a preban, then you can put all those cool evil features on it. Retactable stock, bayolug, flash hider, yata yata yata.

If its a post ban that does sound like top dollar for an armalite.
You may wanna take bulldogs advise and get a Bushmaster.
I have seen post ban bushmasters go for 700$ and as low as 600$.

FYI, I own a colt and a BM.

You should check out AR15.com's forsale forum. You will find some great deals.

Well......... that is when the site comes back on line.

Good luck

I have both the car-15 and ar-15 from Olympic Arms and have no problems with either one, I would recommend them. As far as twist rate, the 1 in 9 twist will work with the lighter bullets, 55gr and so forth but if you are going to shoot the heavier bullets 70gr and up, the 1 in 8 or the 1in 7 twist rate will work better. I have 1 in 9 in my weapons and it works well with most ammo.

$899 is the normal price around this area (Central Pennsylvania)

Moving to the rifle forum. Check for this thread there.

If you can get someone to order you a gun from a wholesaler for a fee you could save a bundle. Dealer cost on a top of the line Bushmaster tactical with the 350 buck C-More halo sight is in the 850 buck range. 899 is a Colt Comp H-Bar flattop, you may even find one with a scope for that price.:) The Bush M-4/A3 with carry handle is @ $659. My neighbor has a FFL so I just tell him what I want and he orders it and I just pay the shipping and transfer fee over cost. You need to find a dealer that orders like this, what you want + 50 or 100 bucks like this guy charges to order. I saw a add for 2 stage target triggers a bit ago for $100 so at least they are not trying to gouge you on that. I have a chrome Colt barrel on mine and it shoots better than I do. If I went with a bull 24in match gun and wanted one hole groups I would pass on the chrome while a decent chrome barrel should shoot 1 MOA with decent ammo.

The stock single-stage triggers on all ARs suck. You can have a trigger job done on them, but it won't hold. The only way to get a good trigger on an AR is to get a good two-stage trigger. The best is supposedly the Milazzo-Krieger, but it's apparently made out of unobtanium, as it is quite expensive and not available. I've got two of the Armalite NM triggers and like them both. Since they go for about $170 without installation, getting an upgrade for only $100 is a deal. The Jewell trigger is supposed to be good as well, but I don't have any direct experience.

Regarding upgrading to the M15A2 NM, what are you planning to do with the gun? If you want to compete in CMP/NRA Service Rifle competitions, you can't use the base M15A2, since that has a muzzle brake which are not allowed in such competitions. Also, if you are going to compete in Service Rifle, you'll need the NM sights and you'll want the free-floated barrel. So it would be a lot cheaper to get the M15A2 National Match, then to get an M15A2, replace the barrel to get rid of the muzzle brake, replace the sights, get a free-floated barrel tube, etc.

So, I'd argue for at least getting the two-stage trigger and going full-boat to the M15A2 NM if you intend to compete in service rifle.
