Armalite AR180B

Have the opportunity to pick up this rifle at a fantasic price, new in the box. What experiences if any have any of you folks had??

I have ordered one but been told that they won't be available until November or December. They had some problems and had to recall the few they had shipped, so you better check on the status of the one you have been offered.

I have an AR-180 (Howa) and IMO it is what the M16 should have been. Cheap to make, easy to maintain, no gas in the action, easy takedown, about immune from dirt and dust (the bolt guide rides on rods, like the M3 SMG), and very reliable. Mine cannot use M16 mags unless they are modified, which the AR-180B is supposed to.

Mine has good military accuracy, but is not up to a tuned M16. Note though, that the M16 was not accurate either until the Army spent millions of (our) dollars to make it shoot well.

All this AR-180B talk is driving me insane!

BTW, I was bit less enthusiastic to hear that the AR-180B does not have a Chromium-lined barrel. According to ArmaLite, that is for "accuracy reasons."

How does that compare with the Chrome-lined AR-15 or AK-47 barrels in terms of longevity and ease of maintenance?

The Chromelined barrel was a mid stream feature add on, when the fielded ARs in Nam "rejected" the improper powder in the supplied ammo

its also a nice feature in a fielded rifle that will not get cleaned every day

A chrome chamber will also aid in extraction

Armalite does not have a chrome lineing facility, like bushmaster, so,
me thinks they are keeping the cost down

FWIW, as I lurk over at AR15.com, the consensus seems to be that chrome plating adds to barrel life, but reduces accuracy.

I don't understand why it would reduce accuracy...is it because the plating results in a barrel that has an uneven dimension to the bore?

Anyway, those that prefer accuracy want "plain" barrels, and say that the extra life of chrome plating won't be noticeable in the shooters lifetime. Those that want durability, and want to shoot frequently, with "good enough" accuracy, want the chrome lining.

This is all third hand, so grain of salt, etc.

And if anyone can comment on chrome lining vs. accuracy, I'd appreciate it. Wish Gale McMillan were still with us.
