how do all the ar-10 owners like their rifles? are they reliable? i would like to have one to compliment my ar-15. i need to have a reliable rifle for hunting in some dangerous country. thanks for any input.

Mine has been flawless in the function department. I have an AR-10 A4 carbine. Chrome-lined bore and barrel.

Don't know what you might expect if you buy a target model. The chamber may be a bit tighter on a target barrel. I haven't read any complaints about this, but it's a thought.

I also have an AR-10 A4 carbine. It shoots great and I've got well over 1000 rounds through it. The biggest problems I've encountered have been magazine related. I've got about 5 of my 16, 20-round mags that have problems stripping the round on the left of the mag.

Supposedly, if you turn the magazine spring 180 degrees on its axis, it will cure this problem. I haven't been able to confirm that though.

thanks for the replies, i thought that there would be more ar-10 owners out there. i was curious about the mags, i have heard they can be problematic. i have a hard time spending that kind of scratch for a less than reliable firearm. that includes mags, they are the heart of any semi-auto. i just really like the idea of having a big brother for my bushmaster. which is drop-dead reliable. of course, i only use the best mags. are the 10rd mags more reliable than the 20rders? if so, i could use those for hunting.

Sixteen 20rd.mags?? Holy buckets!

I've got two M-14 mags sitting on the shelf waiting for mag kits that I haven't even ordered yet.:( I was kind of hoping to eventually have four or five 20rd. mags.

Nicholai, be patient. There are other owners around who will probably give you more info.

And thanks for the tip, mpthole. I'll remember it if I have a similar problem.

I have the AR10A4 with the match stainless barrel. It shoots fantastic and is far more accurate than I am. The magazine issue is a pain. I received 5 magazine conversions kits from Armalite. I had to do a bit of fitting to get them to work right. The insides of the magazine bodies are very rough. Also the follower did not fit quite right. I just used the dremel tool on the follower and eventually got it to work well. However, the thing was still sticking at the top of the magazine. Solution: Get a can of Remington Dry Lube. Spray the inside of the mag body throughly. After that they worked perfectly:)

I would recommend this rifle highly.

I have the carbine flat top AR-10. During breakin i had a few jams, and thats normal, but after a few hundred rounds through it, its smooth and troubble free. The accuracy is impressive.

I have lots of converted 20 rounders as well as 1 10 rounder and all work flawlessly. I would highly recommend the AR-10, especially for its ergonomics and balance.

The only problem with my AR-10 is that i'm in CA, wont register, and had to smuggle it into a free state. No i can only shoot it once a year when I drive accross 4 states to play with it. =(

thanks for all the information. i just don't know if i want to pay that much money for a rifle that i have to fiddle with the mags to get them to work. seems that should be part of a high-end rifle, they have done all the tedious nonsense for you. i am leaning toward a stainless synthetic Tikka with detachable 5rd mags at the moment unless the 10rd mags are more reliable than the 20rd ar-10 mags. do these work better?

Check out Armalite's web site for an interesting bit of info regarding fake AR-10 mags that have been sold as Armalite products.
