Argh! The Waiting!

I should be getting my new VEPR II .308 from Robinson Armament by the first week of November. I can't wait! I've already got a thousand rounds of surplus South African ball ammo waiting at home. A .308 AK! What an idea!

But it gets better! I'm not one to settle for ten round magazines. I have a gunsmith in Texas who says he can convert it to FAL magazines for me. (From Independence Arms...he's both a FAL and an AK smith, so I'm assuming he can do it). If, by chance, he can't, or he's unavailable at the time, Kreb's Custom converts 'em to M14 magazines for $100.

If you're saying that "well, M14 mags are expensive", that's true, especially compared to five dollar FAL magazines. But seeing as how a standard, 10-round VEPR .308 mag costs $40 from Robinson, an extra ten bucks or so for a 20-round USGI M14 magainze isn't a big loss, for getting twice the capacity.

I don't know if I'll be able to give a range report after the conversion, not soon, anyway. Winter is fast approaching here in Upper Michigan and my shootin' spot may soon be filled with snow...

Update

I'm going to send it to Kreb's Custom , I think, and have it converted to M14 magazines. The mags cost more, but Kreb's has done these conversions before, so they have experience, and that translates into less risk to my investment. They also do a pretty cool looking handguard conversion, but it'd look silly unless I got the barrel shortened as well, and I want a 20" barrel for .308.

Speaking strictly on esthetics, I think the "Before" looks better than the "After."

Just my humble opinion. ;)

BEFORE

I actually agree with SpyGuy on this one. Before DEFINITELY looks better than after. (Except maybe the extra 10 rds of ammo.)

Just another humble opinion. :)

You know what else I think would be cool?

If Robinson, or the Russian company that makes them, would offer the VEPR or VEPR II in .243. It could only require a different barrel/chamber than the .308 version.

I'd also like to see a long-action AK-type in .30-06, .270, and .35 Whelen.

Could they make a short-action, like a variant of the VEPR II .308, in .35 Remington?

Well, I think these'd be cool, though I don't know how well they'd sell. :)
