ARGH! AR lower, M4 upper

In a credit-card-fueled impulse purchase, I bought a new Colt M4 16.1" upper on the theory of shortening my pre-ban Colt Gov't Model AR-15 by 4" with a couple twists of a screw and a flourish of plastic. Well, gosh darn was I wrong. The M4 upper has a smaller and just-slightly-off-center hinge hole. NOW WHAT? Any way of making this work, or am I just screwed? (Any comparable problems with the M4-style Colt collapsing stock?)

(Anyone want a new gen-u-wine Colt M4 upper plus matching collapsing stock?)

If I'm not mistaken, your lower is the oddball. Colt did some mods to their ARs to achieve a proprietary sort of design.

I believe you can use "offset" pins to get things to go together right. They shouldn't be very expensive and are available anywhere AR stuff is sold.

Colt made the consumer lowers with non standard front pin holes
so the "children" would not mount military uppers
