Being a sucker for old/different firearms that are priced right the LGS has one that can be picked up for 150.00. Wood is nice, refinished I would guess, barrel has some rust pits, bore seems bright. Anyway just some of your thoughts would be welcome. Wiki didn't have much. Thanks deadeye.

It depends on the particular model and make of the rifle. There has ben more than one gun chambered for this round. The cartridge is in the same class as the 308 Win and 30-06 in power.

1891 or 1909? I would guess it is an 1891 because of the price. The 1891 has a box magazine that extends below the belly of the stock, the 1909 is a Mauser 98 pattern rifle.

1891 Argentine Mausers are a refined 1890 Belgian Mauser, which was a refinement of the 1888 Commission rifle. Loads should be kept mild. Other than that, old rifles are fun.

Yes 1891 I believe was on the receiver, the magazine is as low as the trigger guard. I didn't have my readers with but thought I saw the word Berlin(could be belgian) on the receiver. Will check tomorrow. Thanks all.

1891 Argentine mauser are SUPERBLY built. A true classic. The early designed mauser has been eclipesed but I not sure the quality has ever been surpassed. That being said, the price of these vary according to originality.

Don't want to start an argument, but are you sure that it is about like a 30.06 ? I had one on an Arisaka action and used it for deer off and on over the years and it did not seem all that powerful.

Ballistics are similar to the .303 British, .308, and 7.7 Arisaka. They're nice deer hunting rifles, but don't expect a 'tack driver'. Also if you handload ammo isn't too bad. Privi Partisan is the cheapest I've seen for production ammo for about 16 bucks a box. Mine likes the Hornady 'Custom' rounds. I hit a 5/5 inch target cube at 100 yards open sights consistantly (hard to tell where they hit since the thing just bounces around). You'll like it, but like someone said before if you do handload keep the rounds in spec. Idiots who hot load have a tendency to set the bolt back in the receiver.

To Gun Plummer: I found these for you, the Argentine holds close to the Velocity of the 30/06 but the energy is a few hundred ft/lbs less.

1891

I've always liked the "1891 Cavalry Carbine", lightweight , fast handling,
mild recoil and enough power for anything I would ever hunt.
I'm a hand loader and I love those odd, old cartridges, they still get
the job done. nuthin fancy, just good shootin !!

Most of the 1891's were very nice rifles. The machine work was well done and the finish was on a par with your best sporters. I have 2 left. One is a sporter and the other is in its original configuration. I did build a sporter for a cousin. It was rebarreled with an tapered octogon barrel and black walnut stock. Last time we were hunting together (about 5 years ago), he got a nice 3pt Mulie with it.

I have had my 1891 Argentine Mauser for a month

Love the gun. The reciever should say something along the line of LOEWE made in berlin. The rifle is a very accurate one. Ammunition is from low price PPU (prvi partisan) at around $17 a box. Hornady at $27 a box and Norma around $40 a box. Save your brass for reloads keep the pressure down below 42000. This is my first mauser. I am a big fan of the mosins.:D

Ps. clean it with a .308 brush unless you have an original.
