In light of North Korea's missile launches and possible involvment with China, Iran, and Venezuela, and their blatant disregard of the requests of the world, Israel's attack on Lebanon and Gaza. The war in Iraq. Terrorist attacks in the US, England, Spain, and India. Terror plots stopped in Canada and the US. The fact that there are thousands of Islamists out there that want nothing more that to convert or kill everyone different than them. Are we on the verge of World War III? Am I just paraniod or is it a reality? What's your opinion?

I believe actually it would be WWIV, counting the Cold War as WWIII(unless you count that as an extension of WWII, but anyway...)

We're getting there. Whether the time is NOW or not, well, I dunno. Don't care, really. It's beyond my control and, anyway, I read Revelation again this morning... :)

I don't think Kim is dumb enough to REALLY do anything with those long range missiles of his. Sure, most of the rest of the world hates America, but if he hit us with a Taepedong (sp?), the rest of the world probably wouldn't be too happy with him...

As for Israel...look at their history. They're always in a tussle with somebody..

I doubt we're going to have a WWIII of any significance. If we did, a loosing power would almost inevitably use nukes and everyone knows this. MAD still applies.

Isreal is the aggressor I am forced to say

Pshaw. Which party crossed whose border and abducted and killed soldiers of which nationality again?

Hezbollah mounts a raid into Israel and kills and kidnaps Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah has been shelling Israel with rockets for a good long while now. If the Lebanese government (which is partly Hezbollah) won't do anything to curb Hezbollah, what the hell are the Israelis supposed to do?

Hezbollah has free reign in Lebanon, and they have the full support of the Lebanese government and its population. If they don't like what they're getting right now, they need to re-evaluate that support. Actions have consequences, and it's a bad idea to play a game of brinkmanship with the only country in the Middle East that actually has working nukes.

I'm fully in Israel's camp on this one. Their country is the only bright spot in the sinkhole that is the Middle East, and if they decide that Lebanon and Syria are a continuing threat to their existence (which the Lebanese and Syrians make little effort refuting), then Israel's gotta do what Israel's gotta do.

It's a trick question. We've been on the verge of WWIII since Japan surrendered in 1945. Only the players have changed, and some of them only slightly.

Nukes are the connecting thread between the different players. Nukes changed the rules and realities of war that no one has yet completely figured out. In other words, the technology outran us--morally, mentally, and emotionally--and we are still trying to catch up. Think less about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and more about Chernobyl.

There may be a big war in the middle east, but it won't be a world war. The Euros will stay out, the Russians will stay out, the Chinese will stay out, European empires no longer control most of Africa and Asia, so those countries will stay out. I think even most of the Arabs will stay out; they don't want any part of what Lebanon is getting. But I think Iran has something up its sleeve, and will pull it out soon. It could be a big enough war to shut down oil exports from the middle east and trash the world economy. But not a world war. Not this one.

This round is in Lebanon, aggressive to say the least

Israel will come back and shut that country down and then Lebanon will have to do its job to stop this problem within their borders.

The situation will cool down. I believe it is a diversion. Something else is brewing. We are being tested right now with many hot spots and see how the USA reacts.
Iran is bluffing we are to close to their border for them to get to far out of hand.
We still have tremendous fire power in that area of the world.
We actually have tremendous fire power all over the world about now I would say.

I would say our submarine's are on special alert.

So predictable

The Administration couldn't get Iran through the U.N., so this happens. It's like you hitting my friend to draw me into the fight. So, now if they help their friends, Syria, or Lebanon, that will be the reason to go to into Iran. Protecting Israel. This will piss off Russia and China and God probably. That will be more enemies than we can handle, my friends. But wait, we have all these immigrants who would fight for the status of citizenship. Problem solved. Stock up on everything, my friends and I hope I'm wrong, but any way you cut it, it's gonna cost more for freedom.

I agree, expect to see the use of nuclear weapons on or about 9/12/06.1/3 of the earths population killed over a 1/4 part of the earth,to start with.

I voted not sure because we very well could be. To be honest our governments in here in the US have brought this on us IMHO. Yes, i fully expect to take flak for saying that. But before you argue, consider this:

*What country thought it had an obligation to protect and promote democracy through the world 50-60 years ago?
--How many civil wars of other countries has it gotten that country
involved in?
*Did Iraq attack us in 1990 when we went to war with them the first time?
*Did Iraq attack us in the last five years, or did they actually have 'weapons of mass destruction?'
*What country publically endorsed Iraq in the Iraq/Iran war and then allowed weapons to be supplied to Iran?
*Who was it that trained Osama Bin Laden and why?
--i'll give you a hint, it had to do with protecting and promoting
democracy around the world...
*Name the country that became involved in a Korean civil war and is actually the reason that Korea stayed divided.
*Name a country, other than the Soviet Union themselves, that was instrumental in the break-up of the Soviet Union and fall of the Iron Curtain--good.
*Now who else do we know that watched this happen, is a major world power and would like to stay communist; and what might their thoughts be about a country that engaged their former communist buddies (The Soviet Union) in a 50 year cold war?
--Do you think maybe they're a bit concerned we might focus our attention
on them when the dust settles from all this other crap?
*Name a country that supported, supplied and trained Isreali military, and made pretty much a standing offer of protection to Isreal even when Isreal held on to a little strip of land called the Gaza Strip?

Okay, is it any freaking wonder they hate us? Honestly, what the *&!! are we doing?!

chemist308- Hmmm,i keep thinking back to Washington's farewell speech to the nation. Now lets see, what was that he said about the virtues of minding one's on business?. Oh ya,now i remember.;)

Actually, I'd call it WW IV as III more or less ended when the Berlin Wall came down and Germany was reunited. I could be wrong tho'.
Name the country that became involved in a Korean civil war and is actually the reason that Korea stayed divided.
Could Be China. Could be Russia, as they occupied the northern part of Japanese controlled Korea in '45. Could be the USA, who, decided to block Russia's foray into the Korean peninsula in '45 by occupying the lower half. Couldn't be the UN.
Name a country, other than the Soviet Union themselves, that was instrumental in the break-up of the Soviet Union and fall of the Iron Curtain--good.
I do recall Ronald Reagan telling Gorbachev to tear down the (Berlin) wall and the US (western capitalistic free market economy) outspending the Soviet Union (NOT a western capitalistic free market economy) in a star wars (SDI) arms race.
Honestly, what the *&!! are we doing?!
Trying to keep our western capitalistic free market economy trade routes (and partners) alive and open, much to the chagrin of a couple of other nation/states who'd like to do the same, maybe not so free market oriented???

To borrow (paraphrase and somewhat cleanup) a colorful phrase from the author W.E.B. Griffin, "You play ball with (the USA) or you get the bat stuck up your (economic welfare)".

It may not be right in everyone's eyes... but it helps keep our economy alive, bills paid and food on the table. I'm sure there are other alternatives, but history has led us down this path. Throw in a few religous zealots to stir the pot and whattayagot? Bippity-boppity-boo.

I don't think this will spill out of the middle east.

Edit: eh, we have an Odd-Job too now? Could make for confusion at some point :)

*Did Iraq attack us in the last five years, or did they actually have 'weapons of mass destruction?'
Yes, in fact, they DID have weapons of mass destruction and programs therefor, despite the unrelenting efforts of the propagandists to repeat a lie often enough. I suppose you haven't been following the ongoing translations of the mountain of captured Iraqi government documents, eh?

Okay, is it any freaking wonder they hate us?
So I guess we are the reason they destroyed the Buddhist statues in Afghanistan, attacked the Hindus in Bombay, set off bombs in Turkey, took over Somalia, and are in conflicts in countries throughout the world, such as Indonesia, Sudan, and Kashmir.

I guess some people are resolutely determined to never know their enemy...

"Know the enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles you will never be in peril. When you are ignorant of the enemy, but know yourself, your chances of winning or losing are equal. If ignorant both of your enemy and yourself, you are certain in every battle to be in peril."
I just hope they don't take the rest of us down with them.

yes

Call me crazy but its not the verge, its here and now. There is no fixing this. Easy for us to say how silly it all is, when we"re here. This has been very slowly escalating for over 10 years now. The 1st gulf war was never ended, it was a cease fire, enforced with no fly zones. We are at a cross roads. We pick our sides and live or die bye them.

WWIII has been with us for years, it's the muslim extremists vs the rest of the world. Sadly most people in the world are clueless .
