Are we ever going to see the 17 rimfire?

It seems every few years I see something about the .22 mag necked down to .17 by some manufacturer or another, but it never get's off the ground. You would think with all the new (and sorry but I think nearly useless) cartridges being brought out someone would give it a try.

Anybody heard anything, or like me think it would go over just a bit?

The problem is not getting the rifles chambered in that caliber, the biggest problem is getting brass manufacturers such as Starline to tool up to produce that cartridge. No one wants to make brass if the demand isn't there, and as you suggested, in a rimfire cartridge.

I doubt if there there would be enough interest generated in a cartridge to fill a gap between the .22WMR and the .222 or .223 remington cartridges. A .17 cal rimfire would also be impossible to reload, and many of our wildcats came from reloaded cartridges that were eventually adopted by major manufacturers due to increased public interest. For those wanting a .17 cal, there is still the .17 Rem centerfire cartridge floating around.

You could also get one of those really high powered pellet guns.

Remington produced a 5mm rimfire some years ago and now the cartridges are collectors items. A couple of boxes are worth more than the rifles. I wouldn't invest my money in a .17 rimfire. I know two guys stuck with 5mm rimfires that are largely worthless today.

There are wildcat centerfire options that will ballistically match a .17 necked down from a 22 magnum and there is the .17 Remington that was mentioned previously.

17 Agilla!

Volquartsen and Aguilla have teamed up and made a 22LR neck down to 17 caliber. Very prototype in nature, but good enough to appear at Shot Show. Have not heard or seen anything since then. It is not on either one's web page, but a little inquiry can yield answers to those interested.

I've read that Aguila is having labor problems at their factory in Mexico. That's why the Aguila rimfire ammo is hard to find now and it might have something to do with the delayed introduction of the Aguila .17.

Aguila having labor problems

I had read that also on a Bullseye e-mail list. Someone just called Aguila and the person told them that it looked like the labor problems were going to be ending.

I guess the guys on the bullseye list like the Aguila SV ammo so they are keeping track of the Aguila situation.

Not to be funny or anything, but you would figure that with the depressed economy over there, labor would be the last thing they would have problems with. Hmm..maybe they learned the word "Unions" in Mexico?
