It seems like Dan Wesson and Colt have dropped out of the revolver market. I can't find a web page for either, whereas I used to be able to.

DW is only making 1911's and were bought by CZ it seems.

Colt's web page only markets to LE and military.

That leaves:
S&W
Ruger
Taurus
Rossi
Comanche
Charter 2000

Did I miss anyone else?

Out of these makers, I don't think I would buy a new Comanche or Charter.

Do we need more quality revolver makers?

EDIT: Oops, I screwed up the question in the poll... It should read:

Are there too few DA revolver manufacturers out there?

How about a company that offers a cylinder crane on the RIGHT side rather than the left... for us lefties?

How about a company that specializes in moon-clip revolvers and optimizes their build, their frames, their cranes, etc. for moonshooters?

How about a company that makes a .223 varmint DA revolver?

How about a barrel in the 6" position rather than 12" to put the recoil more in line with your hand and make faster follow-up shots (like an exotic mateba)?

Any other ideas out there?

Do we need more quality revolver makers?

Yes yes yes yes...

More is better. More drives innovation. More drives improved quality. More drives more aggressive pricing.

We are all better off with more manufacturers competing against each other.

gb_in_ga is right the more the merrier. I'm looking at my first revolver and all I can drool over are Rugers, S&W & sometimes Taurus.

I looked for Dan Wesson, but they seem to have been bought out by CZ.

I was going to go 1911, but there are way too many to drool over ( then get acked by their prices).

I would say Charter 2000 is out of business. The importation of CZ, Manurhin and Baikal revolvers would be welcomed. IIRC, Baikal has a polymer framed, breaktop, double action 357 Magnum.

How about a company that makes a .223 varmint DA revolver?

Interesting idear. Long pipe I'd assume, say 10"? How many rounds could you safely stuff in a 44 mag size cylinder? Intergral scope mounts. I'd be fine with SA, don't really see the point of DA. Very interesting.

This poll asks "Are there are enough.." , and the only 'Yes' response records that "more gunmakers is always better."

So, if I select the "Yes" because I think there are enough, I have really voted no because it records that I want more.

Mr. Harris would not approve. :D

Amen

gb in ga has it word for word what I was thinking. Compatition is where business grows & evolves. I hope the compatition leaders always stay American compies (as it is now) but more names with new inovation adopted thruout the spectrum of compatition is never a bad thing.

I would just like Colt to get back into the market. I think they are really loosing a good bet by not producing the old Detective Special anymore, and I suspect the Python would do well if they mass-produced it again.

Pretty hard to mass produce the Python or older Detective Specials. Their design is 19th Century and it takes a skilled craftsman to assemble and to time one correctly. Can't do that with a highly paid workforce drawn from high school drop-outs on drugs (to borrow a term from Robert Dunlap).

I voted 'needs more manufacturers' but you know what I would really like? I really want Ruger to diversify their DA revolver selection. They apparently started out with a good selection of SP101s and GP100s with 9mm and .22 options and such, but now they're all .357. That's borring! I'd really like Ruger to bring back the 9mm sp101 and start offering DA options in .45 ACP and .41 and maybe even a .22 target DA.

This one was really a tough call for me. I mainly stay with S&W and Ruger as it is. (MAINLY S&W when it comes to DA, although I do also have a couple Tauri and even a Rossi). However, I do whole-heartedly agree with stephenkl, I wish Ruger AND S&W would broden their lines a bit. I wish S&W would bring back the K-frame for more options along with more blued guns. I also wish that they offered more variety in the .44 Special and .41 mag guns. ESPECIALLY the .41 mag. I would love to see them bring back the Model 57, or at least broden the 657 from just one barrel length and shroud configuration. I have always wanted to have a Smith .41 with a 4 inch barrel and half shroud. Where I live though the Model 57 apparently never made it to as I have NEVER seen a used one. Ahhh...as the saying goes though...you can wish in one hand and crap and in the other and see which gets filled first.

Voted - yes - but....

ain't holding my breath.

Proper D/A revolver shooting is quickly becoming a lost art.:(

I heard a rumour that other companies besides S&W made DA revolvers, but I checked in my safe and can't find any evidence to support it. ;)
