Are there good reasons NOT to carry spare magazines or speedloaders?

I can't think of a single good reason not to. A reload is generally much easier to find a place for than the gun itself.

Oleg Volk said it all. Weight, bulk and one more item to bulge and be noticed if one is not entirely legal or wants to go unnoticed.

Hmmmm. Still thinking... No!

I must admit - Quite often I leave the spare mags in my brief case. Oops.
But I do try to keep reloads close by.

Crap. Thats what they said in Dade County Florida didnt they?

I shall strive to do better.

None that I can think of!!!

Just as there is no such thing as too much fun,
there is no such thing as owning just one gun!!!

Now, go do the right thing, and buy that Walther!!

Possibly suicide??
Sure won't need that second mag, will ya?

I know of a great reason not to carry a spare mag! If your gun works just like the movies. You never run out of ammo!

Suppose you have a backup gun that's roughly the same size and weight as a spare magazine. (Example: Kel-tec P32 vs. Glock 23 mag with 13 rounds.) The backup gun might be more useful, since in a situation where you can't reach the primary gun you might be able to use the backup.

Just a thought.

Yeah, but THEN you gotta carry *TWO* spare mags - one for the primary and one for the backup!!! j/k (I carry a spare mag...)

I always wondered about guys who carry hi-cap glocks. lets face it 17 rounds of 9mm wieghs a lot... on the other hand it might "offset the wieght" of the pistol in a shoulder rig...

I always carry 24 rounds in the woods.. regardless of the gun, (unless its my 380 , and in that case I only have 2 magazines)

so that usually means 2 spares for the 45, or one spare for the hi-power.. but that's "belt carry" that stuff does add a lot of bulk.

Why take a chance?
You take enough risks everyday.

Mag and ammo related issues are fairly high on the list of things that can go wrong with a semi-auto. A spare mag isn't as good as a spare gun, but it can solve a lot of problems on short notice. It isn't so much the extra ammo as it is the extra system that delivers the ammo to the gun.

Magazines? No. Carry one or two at all times.

Soeed loaders? Maybe. They can sometimes be hard to conceal. However, there are other ways to carry spare ammunition for a revolver.

An example where lotsa ammo helped.

In the old edition of "Principles of Personal Defense" by Jeff Cooper that I have, he describes a student of his who was
attacked as he drove into his driveway by 4
revolver-armed bad guys. He did almost everything wrong in the Cooper Principles EXCEPT aggressiveness. He fired 22 shots in under 20 seconds according to the Colonel and the panicked bad guy foursome fled.

Cooper doesn't say what he was shooting other than a pistol IIRC. If this student was an old school hardcore Cooper type and shooting a 1911, he used at least 3 magazines.

I'm not saying the "mad minute" is the way we ought to prepare to fight, (apparently he missed a lot!) but in this case the 22 rounds of ammo saved the good guy's life.

I only reason I can think of for not carrying extra mags is if you are not carrying a gun. Then it makes absolutely no sense. Seriously John W made a good point about carrying a share gun instead of spare ammo. Having had a extractor break off on a Ruger , which totallly disabled the gun, I balance my G23 with a G27.It you are in a Luby's Restaurant situation and a mad man is shooting/killing people and you are armed I feel you have a responsible to save lives. In that case you are more involved/comitted (and in more danger) than if you take no action or have no weapon. You do not then want to have a part break at that time.

22 shots in 4 seconds...
And the Bad Guys Fled.
Sheesh.
Sight, Aquire, Fire.
Guy must have been shooting either a Hi-point and kept missing, or a .22 and the Bad Guys got tired of getting poked.
If he had a .45 and was a student of Cooper's I would hope at least those 4 guys ended up in an emergency room.

I doubt if Cooper could claim 100% accuracy from all of his students. If so he would be named King.
Cases of firing over 100 shots and nothing being hit at close range are easy to find. I seem to find one around this country every few weeks. Always fun to see the "excuses" when this happens. The montra seems to be "more training" with no mention of what kind or how much, but mostly just more of what they did that produced the fiasco.

Absolutely NONE! Remember, you should always carry a spare mag. The magazine is perhaps one of the most important pieces of a firearm. If the mag is damaged or doesnt feed properly, the firearm wont work properly. Your firearm is as good as your magazine. Sure there are combat style firearms that will fire w/out a mag in the well, but you will have to handload each round, if the mag is disabled or lost, not good in a combat or self defense situation.
